Overheard Affirmations

Spencer is in the office playing a computer game. I just heard him talking to himself and say:

"I amaze myself. I am awesome."

Yes you are, Spence!

Shopping with a Toddler

I was at Hobby Lobby today buying a few new ornaments for my tree. (Yes, of course they matched my color scheme - I am a tree snob, after all.)

The line was kinda long and Josh kept wandering around getting into things. He's starting to really resist being put in a cart, and with a baby coming in less than six months I figure now's as good a time as any to help him learn how to behave out of the cart while shopping.

Anyways.

I finally got to the front and started checking out. Suddenly, over the loudspeakers blasts the busy tone of a phone. The cashiers all start looking around and checking their phones, trying to figure out where it's coming from.

Uh-oh.

Where's Josh?

He suddenly and guiltily sneaks out from behind one of the empty cash registers.

"Oh, he pressed the button! I'll get it!" says my cashier as she rushes over to where Josh was and stops the noise.

Of course it was Josh. He was literally out of my sight for less than 30 seconds.

I grabbed him and started apologizing profusely. It wasn't that big of a deal, but I was still embarrassed. And, oddly, not that surprised. Then I made Josh apologize.

"I sorry", he said, as cutely and sweetly as possible. Then he hid his face in my legs and continued shyly peeking out until I was done paying.

All the ladies around us were charmed and amused. All was forgiven.

And of course Josh knew this. It probably went just as he planned.

Preschool Christmas Program

Tonight was Spencer's Preschool Christmas Program.

Too cute. I'm one proud Momma.

We weren't sitting close enough to get any good pictures of Spencer. But I did get one of Joshie and Daddy applauding.

And I was also able to get some video. Funny video.

The first part shows what happens when Spencer jingles his bell a little too hard. The second part shows Spencer's interpretation of how Rudolph's nose got to be so red. (Sorry the video is kinda shaky - I kept laughing.) The third part is just a cute grandparent-eye-candy rendition of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas".

After the program we enjoyed a few cookies and some punch. Oddly enough, I was the first to spill my drink, but it was only a couple of tablespoons worth. Josh followed suit spilling the entire cup. Nice.

We tried to get a picture with Spencer and his two buddies, Jonas and Dallin. No dice. The three stooges lived up to their nicknames. (But it was cute, so it was okay.)

Then I tried to get one good picture of Spencer for the evening. This was the best I could get. (The others included him on the floor and hiding under his coat. He was sleepy and still upset that I made him dress up. Stinker.)

Pregnancy Brain

I lose my mind when I'm pregnant. Figuratively and literally.

Figuratively: I seriously considered plunking down $140 for this awesome remote control dinosaur that the boys are in love with. In luurrrrrvvve with. But then I came to my senses.

Literally:
1) The other day I forgot the name of the company that Margot's husband owns. My husband used to work there.

2) I decided to get an early start on dinner today since the soup I made takes a while to cook. I put everything in the pot and went to fold some laundry. Thirty minutes later I came back to check on the soup and was perplexed as to why it wasn't simmering. I had forgotten to turn the heat on.

3) There was a third example, but it has, not-so-surprisingly, been completely forgotten. Dang it.

4) Oh wait - I remember. When I am in Primary now I totally forget the names of people I know. I've known some of the these people for years - some of the kids all of their lives - and yet I couldn't tell you their names to save my life.

I also seemed to have forgotten all of the wonderful little indignities that pregnancy seems to offer. Which is probably Mother Nature's way of making sure that our species continues. Otherwise, who in their right mind would do this over and over?

Despair

The medicine didn't help Josh last night.

He was up at 1:30am in all his fury. I don't think we got back to bed until 2:30am.

*sigh*

This too shall pass, right?

Inexperienced Parents

For the past month or so Josh has been waking up in the middle of the night, crying, freaking out, and causing general mayhem. His reasons range from being hungry to being scared to just wanting Mommy.

Waking up with a scared or sick child doesn't bother me too much - as long as the child is willing to go back to sleep.

Josh is not.

In the middle of the night he becomes even more stubborn, insolent, and challenging than his usual self. (I didn't think that was possible, but it is.) Trying to reason with him is like trying to reason with an insane person. A really insane person. Who speaks a different language.

It's like experiencing the seventh circle of hell. Only more miserable.

Unfortunately, the middle of the night is not my best time right now. I'm tired. Tired. And nauseous. And I usually have to pee. I just don't have the stamina to deal. So I'm the parent who would rather just give in to all his demands just to get him back into bed. Unfortunately, Josh takes advantage of this and won't go back to bed for me.

Enter Daddy, the enforcer. I'm not quite sure what goes on in there. Josh cries a lot and I hear a lot of "Joshie, go back to bed." But he gets him to stay in bed and sleep. So poor Lance has been on Joshie duty.

I've been racking my brain, trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with this kid. And finally tonight I randomly thought, "I wonder if he's getting some molars."

After a stern "DON'T BITE ME" and a quick rubdown of his gums, it was confirmed: he's teething!

I feel kinda stupid. It's not as if I'm a completely inexperienced parent. Just where Josh is concerned, I guess.

Anywho, he got a good dose of Ibuprofen before bed tonight; let's hope it will be a good sleep for all concerned.
