Spencer's First Court of Honor

Spencer went to his first court of honor last night for Boy Scouts. He earned his first Boy Scout badge - First Aid.

You know who else went to the court of honor? Josh, Cole, Tess, and me. Lance had to hold down the fort at our ward building while we trekked out to the stake center.

Josh? Josh was an angel. He totally behaved himself the entire time.

Cole and Tess? NOT SO MUCH. It was all I could do not to knock their naughty little heads together for a moment of peace. Seriously. Court of honors right before bedtime should not be attended by the 5 and under set.

And Spencer? He was excited but refused to admit it. And proud. And he refused to tuck in his shirt as we were leaving the house, but as soon as we walked in there and he saw all those teenage boys with their shirts tucked in he quickly followed suit. That's the kind of peer pressure I like!

Cole's Pre-K Graduation

As you may have seen on Facebook or Instagram, today was Cole's Pre-K Graduation. I have a hard time with things like this. A graduation - for Pre-Kindergarten? Give me a break. I was pretty snarky about the whole thing - especially when I heard one mom RSVP for 10 people. TEN PEOPLE. I didn't even tell Lance about it because I didn't feel like it was really something he needed to take off work for.

World's greatest mother, I know.

I can't help it. I'm of the mind that if every little thing is celebrated, then is it really a celebration? You know, along the lines of if everyone is special then no one is special, right?

Anyways, today's program turned out to be more of an end-of-the-year thing rather than graduation. And it was actually pretty cute. I just wish they hadn't used the word "graduation"; I would've been much less snide. (Yes, it was their fault.)

The kids did a few songs. It was... a bunch of 4 and 5 year olds singing. Out of key and darling. Cole was pretty excited to see us there - he kept waving and waving.

Tess was mesmerized... for a while. Then she got bored and kept climbing all over me. The joy.

They gave each child a diploma and a "goof-ball" award - kind of like superlatives.

Cole was voted "Most Determined". TRUTH, MRS. FORD AND MISS PERDUE!!!

After the awards they showed a little slideshow set to music. It had all sorts of pictures and such from the year. It was cute - but not $12 cute, which is what they were selling it for. (Say what?!)  During the slideshow they had asked the kids a few questions and then showed their answers with their pictures. The first question was "What do you love about yourself?", but I think most of the kids thought it was something like "What do you love to do" because they answered "I love to play with my dad" or "I bake cookies with my mom". What did Cole answer? "I went to Mt. Rushmore!"

Classic.

Then they asked the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. After lots of answers like "scientist", "doctor", "vet", and "teacher", Cole answered "A DELIVERY TRUCK DRIVER"! This got a few good chuckles from the audience, the loudest from me. Way to reach for the stars, Cole! (Also, I have got to stop shopping so much online...)

After the program we had dessert in the social hall. Tess threw tantrums because she wanted a balloon and couldn't have one. But Cole behaved!

We sat with his good buddy, Evan. I really hope Evan is in Cole's Kindergarten class next year. He's such a spunky, outgoing kid, and really good for Cole.

Each child was sent home with a little gift bag full of little goodies, a book, a pencil, and a mini year book. It was super cute.

Here's the mini yearbook.  Cole was quite taken with it. (It includes photos from the year with little captions.)

Tess... had a hard time not being the center of attention. The horror.

So, despite my bad attitude, it was a good morning. Now, on to Kindergarten!

Joy's Memorial

I feel like I've really neglected this blog post. I have two reasons for this: 1) (the lame reason) I was waiting for some pictures from someone else (because I was lame and didn't take any, and 2) I knew this would be a hard, emotional post to write.

For a while we had known that Lance's mom was going to pass away. But she kept seeming to rally, so when we received a phone call during the Saturday morning session of conference, we were still a bit surprised. Losing someone you love is hard, even if you do know it's coming.

Lance's dad decided to have a graveside service soon after her death and then have a memorial service 2 weeks later. We chose to attend the memorial service. We also chose to bring all of our kids, because we felt it would be good for them and this was something we needed to do as a family.

We flew into Salt Lake late Thursday (the 16th). The kids did a great job on the plane - Tess and Cole were so excited! But it was close to 1am Indiana time when we finally pulled into my Grandma Roper's house. (We got to stay with Grandma because Dad & Susie are apparently running a youth hostel right now, with three young adults living in their basement. No room at the inn!)

Friday morning we enjoyed a lovely waffle breakfast with Grandma Roper and Grandma Susie. Then we headed over to Highland to be with Viggo and Katrina. That morning Viggo, Lance, and Katrina took care of a bunch of financial stuff at the bank while I stayed at home with the kiddos. At one point we walked down to the cemetery where grandma Joy was buried but couldn't find her at all! (Turns out that her temporary marker had blown away in a wind storm.)  The kids eventually got bored to the point of fighting, so I broke down and took them to a McDonald's with a playplace, where they played and ate for close to 2 hours. Score! (It was a super-nice McDonald's...)

I had volunteered to be in charge of dinner Friday night and Lance had decided we should order from Panda Express. (I was not willing to cook for all those people in a strange kitchen, but also felt like pizza just wasn't enough.) It turned out great; just the perfect thing!  Lance mentioned that it was extra special because his mom would have never agreed to Panda Express. ;) We ate and visited with Uncle Bob & Aunt Joan, Uncle Mike & Aunt Terri, Katrina & Larry & Trevor & Amanda, Viggo, and Dane & Jeneca. It was great to be able to see so much family who we rarely get to spend time with. Joy would have loved it - she was always trying to get the family together.

The memorial was Saturday afternoon. It was held at a local chapel and was done just so well. Katrina had gathered together a lot of Joy's things from her life and lots of pictures and put them on nicely decorated tables all around the cultural hall. There were a ton of chairs set up and almost all of them were full! I was a little worried about how the kids would behave, but they did GREAT. (Miracles, people!) There were ribbons tied to the front rows to save them for family and Tess played with those for almost the entire 90 minutes. Spencer and Josh just sat and behaved, and Cole just needed a little gentle reminding every few minutes. Okay, full disclosure, the last 10 minutes were rough.  Spencer and Cole started fighting and Tess had had enough. But still, on the whole not so bad.

The whole memorial was just lovely. Joy's brother Ed gave the eulogy, and I swear I learned more about Joy in those 20 minutes than I did in the 15 years I had been her daughter-in-law!  Lance and Katrina did a really nice thing where they would each take turns and start with "Because of my mother..." and then talk about something their mother had taught them or done. It was funny and sweet and just perfect; a really lovely tribute. Joy's nephew, Scott, then showed a video he had put together with pictures of Joy; it was really well done and included 3 of Joy's favorite songs. (Which, of course, I cannot remember right now.) President Gibson (recently released counselor from the Genereal YM's presidency then spoke. He had been Viggo's mission companion and a good friend of the family for years and years. It was a really great talk. Viggo talked about Joy's life, how they had met and about their marriage. I was so very impressed with how well he held it together! It was tender and you could just tell how much he loved her. So very, very much!  The bishop concluded the meeting.

Really, the whole memorial was just lovely and peaceful. Of course we're sad about Joy's passing, but it was a great way to remember what a wonderful person she was and to reflect on the gift of the atonement.

The ward provided a meal for the family afterwards, which was just great. It was nice to sit with my dad and Susie and Grandma, who had all come to show their support. (Susie actually played the piano and Dad was the chorister. Grandma helped keep Tess entertained during the memorial!) One of Lance's 2nd cousins took lots of pictures with promises of sending them out, but I've only gotten a few.  Here's the best of my family.

Classic Tess. And bored Josh. That's a picture of Joy in the background. She sure loved her grandchildren!

After the memorial we went back to the cemetery and finally found Joy. It's a lovely cemetery and very close to Viggo's house. While there I could tell that everyone felt better. It was as if a weight had been lifted; Lance was certainly more his normal self. I think the memorial was really good for everyone and helped bring some comfort and closure.

That evening we toured Dane & Jeneca's new town home and then went out to dinner to Zupa's. (A new favorite place for me!) The kids sat at their own table, but it was so loud it was hard to really have a good conversation at the adult table!

You already know about Tess's birthday party on Sunday. What you don't know is that church that morning (in Viggo's ward) was hard because Cole was a PUNK and had to be taken out even BEFORE the meeting started. But we all survived.

On Monday morning we packed our bags and said good-bye to Grandma. She had been so kind and accommodating to let all six of us invade her home. We then headed down to the newly-renovated Bean Life Science Museum at BYU, which was just beautiful! Really, a million times better than it was when I went to school there! (Do I sound old or what?) Kevin and Dad were there to help corral the children. It would have been great, but Tess what tired and crabby and Cole was a JERK. True story: we were going up some stairs and some ladies were going down the wrong way and Cole literally yelled "HEY, GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!" and I just wanted to melt into the floor and hide, because whose kid is that?!??! Mine would never act that way!!!!

Turns out Cole has started a new uber-grouch phase because he's been that way ever since, to the point of losing computer privileges and spending lots and lots of quality time reflecting on his choices while in time out. Harrumph.

After the museum Dad & Susie took us out for lunch at Noodles & Company, where my kids each snarfed down a bowl of macaroni and cheese; they sure love that stuff. Then it was off to the airport and our flight home, which went well, all things considered. (Those things being four exhausted children.)

It was a short but long trip, you know what I mean? We were tired both physically and emotionally for most of it. But it was also a great trip and a wonderful experience. I feel so blessed that we were able to be there with Lance's family and celebrate his mother's life in that way.

Greco Roman Wrestling

So when we get home from church the first thing the kids do is change out of their church clothes because I don't want them destroyed. (Any more than they already are at church.)

This afternoon I went to check on Josh and Cole's progress, but instead of entering the bedroom of two little boys I apparently entered a Roman Colosseum because they were naked as the day they were born and wrestling.

This was new.

I made a few Greco Roman wrestling jokes that went right over their heads. Apparently wrestling in the nude? Ain't no thang for these boys.

I couldn't help but remember a statue that was in our house while I was growing up. I don't know all the details, but (1) I'm pretty sure my dad picked it up on his mission, and (2) I'm pretty sure my mom did not love it as much as he did because I don't remember it being around once my dad was out of grad school and we lived in a 'real' house.

Cole and Josh weren't quite this bad. But I still wanted to ask them who was Hercules and who was Diomedes...

Gender Pronouns are Tricky

Tonight at dinner we learned that Cole does not consider himself a kid. AT ALL. Is he an adult? No. Is he a teenager? No. Is he a baby? NO. What is he, then?

"A boy."

So from now on when I introduce myself I'm going to say that I have three kids and a Cole. Anyone who knows Cole at all will understand this completely.

Tess has always had issues with gender pronouns. I've tried, with no success, to get her say them correctly, but for whatever reason everyone is a "he" or "him".

Tonight at dinner was no better.

Lance: Tess, are you a he or a she?
Tess: I'm a girl.
Lance: Yes, but are you a he or a she?
Tess: I'm. A. GIRL.
Lance: Okay, is Mommy a he or a she?
Tess: She's a... BOY!!
**Cue shrieks of laughter from the peanut gallery.**

Happy 4th Birthday, Tess!

We had a whirlwind trip to UT this past weekend for Lance's mother's memorial. I would blog about that first, but I'm waiting for some pictures to be sent to me. (Hopefully soon!) So in the meantime I thought I'd write about Tess's 4th birthday!

Tess was originally going to have a combined birthday with her friend Millie (Millie was born on the 16th, Tess the 18th), but we found out a week or so ago that we would be in UT over that weekend. And that the memorial would be on the 18th. So we decided that we'd just celebrate on the 19th because 1) it would have been weird to have a big birthday party after the memorial, 2) Tess wouldn't really know/care, and 3) we could have the Madsens and the Ropers all together for the party.  Woo-hoo! (Turns out I was a little wrong about #2 - Tess was a little confused about her actual birthday date and party date. There were complaints about opening presents and such. It's hard to be four.)

First, the cake. We all know my past dramas with dang birthday cakes. They always cause me unnecessary stress. Susie graciously offered to take care of it and she totally knocked it out of the park!!  Hello Kitty is one of Tess's favorite things!!

The cake was actually really good, too. (Usually I'm not a fan of store bought cakes.) Least stressful cake ever!

We got to the Roper house a little early, and the kids (and Lance) (and Kevin... who I sometimes still think of as a kid) ((a REALLY tall kid)) vegged in front of the tv, waiting for all the Ropers and Madsens to arrive.

I'm really kicking myself for not getting pictures of all of the dinner guests. A few of my aunts and uncles and cousins came, as well as Dane (Lance's brother), Jenica (his fiance), Katrina (Lance's sister), Larry (her husband), Trevor & Amanda (Katrina's kids), and Viggo (Lance's dad). It was quite  crowd!

Finally it was time for cake!

She was kind of sullen during the singing, but the girl was happy.

Tess got COMPLETELY spoiled with all of the presents. Way more than she is used to! (I'm already worried about what Cole will expect on his birthday next month...)

She got pink gum (at her request).

And several books, including one that Josh made at school. So sweet!

And lots of Frozen clothes and jewelry. The girl was in heaven!

Even a lei and dress from Hawaii, courtesy of Grandpa ElRay and Grandma Susie.

It didn't take her long to try everything out.

Fabulous, birthday girl!

Sunglasses seemed like the right finishing touch. She was actually quite happy, just being her Tessie self when asked to pose for a picture.

Tess really had a great time and I'm so thankful for everyone who came and made it such a special evening for her. With us living so far away from our family it was a special treat to get to celebrate a birthday with everyone!

Well, most people write about their child's personality and quirks and such in this kind of post. But quite frankly, I don't know what else to add that hasn't already been included in this blog or on Instagram.

Tess is a (generally) happy, friendly little girl, who adds some much needed sweetness to our testosterone-laden clan. I'm so happy she's in our family!

Just A Typical Sunday Night at the Madsen Home

Me: What is that on the floor - wait - IS THAT BLOOD?!??!

Boys & Tess: *crickets chirping*

Me: Whose blood is this?!

Tess: That is mine. It is my mouth blood.

Me: What?! Are you okay? What happened?

Tess: I bit my tongue.

Me (looking at the boys): And none of you noticed this? There's blood EVERYWHERE!!

Boys: *crickets chirping* ... ... No...

Me: How could you not see your sister bleeding this much?

*It should be noticed there were blood spatters all over the basement carpet, on the walls, and on one of our folding tables.*

Spencer: We just didn't see it!

Josh: She didn't say anything!

Me: That's because she was too busy bleeding everywhere....

Cole: NO. NO MOUTH BLOOD.

I spent the next 15 minutes scrubbing blood and cleaning up with nary an offer to help.

Have You Ever Been...

... so willing to get out of making raspberry trellises for your wife that you shoved a very sharp object halfway through your thumb?

And then bled everywhere - including on your 3 year old daughter, who was 'helping' you - and rushed into the kitchen?

And then, while your wife was wrapping your thumb in gauze, you turned a ghastly shade of green and said "I think I'm gonna pass ouuuuu.....". And then you did and your wife had to catch you and lay you on the floor?

And then you woke up a few seconds later and were dazed and confused and asked - three times - how you got on the floor?

And then you tried to get up but your wife had to get mean with you and forced you to lay on the floor while she had your 8 year old go put away all the wood from the project so he wouldn't freak out because he walked in on his dad laying passed out on the kitchen floor?

And then she made you drink out of a Sesame Street water bottle, because that was the closest cup on hand with a lid?

And then your wife heard the garage door opening, which made no sense because no one should have been going in or out that way and your three year old was wandering around who knows where, so she had to leave you on the floor with a pillow under your head? But then, when she finally came back in you were standing up, stilling looking rather green and still quite confused about what had happened?

And then, after you and your wife decided that your injury did not require stitches, you passed out - again - as she wrapped it up - again?

And then your three year old - who you slightly bled on earlier - patted you on the back and said "There there, you're okay, Daddy..."?

And then your wife made you go lay down and take a nap?

Lance has.

(Poor Lance. No wonder he never willingly watched our children being born.)

Cute Things

Cole has a little stuffed (BYU) cougar that he has inexplicably named Bob Tractor. He sure loves Bob, and Bob loves him. Every night Bob is the first animal under the covers so "he doesn't get cold."

*****

We woke up to some pretty strong storms this morning. Miss Tess slept through a lot of it but eventually came into the kitchen claiming that "the clouds woke me up!"

*****

Tess is the first of my children to have an imaginary friend. Her name is Pickett Tibbets and she has fabulously modern rainbow colored hair and super creepy rainbow eyes. She spends a lot of time being nursed back to health by Tess. She also goes to the dentist a lot, but is a good patient and gets a balloon and a toy.  Miss Tibbets often goes to preschool, but hides so no one can see her.

*****
Addendum to the first story: Apparently the cougar isn't Bob Tractor anymore. According to Cole, the cougar's name is Penny. When asked who Bob Tractor was Josh produced a stuffed monkey.

"This," he cried happily "is Bob Tractor!"

"No," said Cole calmly. "That's Monkeysee Monkeydoo."

NON-Birthday Cake?!

We are having the missionaries over for dinner tomorrow, which calls for dessert. (At least in the Madsen household...) When I asked Tess what kind of dessert we should have she said, without a moment of hesitation, "Cake!" Her birthday is coming up, so she has cake on the brain. I had some FABULOUS cake at a baby shower a few weeks ago and had a free sample of delicious carrot cake at Sam's Club last week, so I was game.

I decided to make my cousin's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cake, which is baking in the oven as I type. As Tess and I made the cake (because Tess is ALWAYS in the kitchen when I cook now... it's great... really... it drives me bonkers, but that's okay...)

Anyway, Tess and I were making the cake and Cole sauntered in and asked what we were making.

"CAKE!" Tess happily replied.

"NO," said Cole.

"WAAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAWWAAAAAAA!", replied Tess, much to Cole's delight. He lives for overblown reactions like those.

"We're making cake for dessert tomorrow," I told him.

Cole pondered this for a moment. "Why?"

"Because we're having the missionaries over and I thought it would be nice to have a little dessert."

Cole pondered this some more. "But WHY?"

"Umm... because cake is yummy. And always a good idea."

"But whose birthday is it going to be? Is it going to be Tess's?"

"What? No, you know Tess's birthday is next week."

"BUT WHOSE BIRTHDAY WILL IT BE?!??!"

"Wha...? Oh wait - Cole, you can have cake even if it's not someone's birthday. You can have cake for dessert whenever you want!"

Cole scowled as if I were crazy and wandered off.

Where have I gone so wrong in my parenting that my kids think cake is only for birthdays?!?

Easter 2015

Our Easter festivities began on Friday night with some egg dying. I wasn't even planning on doing it, but Tess and Cole were adamant. It turned out fine, but I was reminded once again about how much work it is just for some colored eggs.

That evening I got home late after dinner with some friends. I found this note from Josh. Darlingness!

It took me a while to figure out how to respond. Then I realized something really important - bunnies can't write! (Although in this case we're assuming the Easter Bunny can read...) So Mr. EB just left his autograph. Classy stationary, right?

This boy was up around 4am. FOUR IN THE MORNING. Fortunately for him, he went back to bed and didn't wake me up until 6:15. Then I was mean and made him (and Cole, who was up by then) wait until 7am to wake everyone else up.

The bunny got sneaky and stole these clothespins from off of my desk to show whose Easter bag was whose. (You'd think we'd have assigned bags by now, but we always forget.)

I got distracted from taking pictures of everyone's bags, but I got this one of Tess's, mainly because of the bubble wrap. That girl loves bubble wrap.

Tess usually wakes up pretty grouchy and slowly. But when I crept into her room and told her that the Easter Bunny had come she JUMPED out of bed and was as happy as could be. Crazy. The first thing she went for was that bubble wrap.

And when she found the pink gum (which she has been coveting at the grocery store for weeks), she was just about overcome with happiness. Tears of joy, for reals.

Spencer got Big Hero 6 - he was pretty excited. (Really and truly, not sarcastically like this picture.) He also got a ton of summer clothes because that boy, he is a'growin'. Like a weed.

The egg hunt commenced. There was rejoicing and fighting and weeping and laughing and everything else you would expect with an egg hunt with four feral children.

I tried to get a picture of Tess with her bag on her shoulder, but she decided to go into comatose mode when I asked her to pose. Punk.

The kids and all their loot.

Yeah, we have TONS of eggs. They seem to multiply in the basement each year.

On Easter morning I just couldn't sleep in (even though Conference is today, which means no getting everyone up and ready for church!). I blame those dang noisy birds in our back yard. Anyway, I decided a nice Easter breakfast was in order.

I got a picture of the table, but I forgot to take one of the food. I made Scotch eggs, buttered toast, and applesauce. It was so tasty, and each kid actually ate at least some of it. (Success!)

I liked this - it's a tradition I could get behind. Maybe next year I'll even iron the table cloth and buy some fresh flowers.

It's been a great Easter, eating yummy food, sitting around in our pajamas, and listening to the wonderful Conference talks. We're really blessed.

Who's the Boss?

I've had the following conversation with Tess several times:

Tess: Mommy, are you the boss?
Me (with no hesitation - hesitation shows weakness): Yes. YES I AM.
Tess: Okay, you are the boss. Can I be the boss when I get big?
Me: Sure.
Tess: Are you the boss of the car?
Me: Yes. YES I AM.
Tess: Can I be the boss of the car when I get big?
Me: ...sure.
Tess: Yes I will be the boss of the car when I get big.

And then she continues to chatter on while I picture her as a 16 year old telling her friends that SHE is the BOSS of the car.

Then today we had the following conversation.

Tess: Daddies car is the blue car and our car is the red car.
Me: Um, yeah.
Tess: The blue car is Daddy's car, he is the boss of the blue car. The red car is OUR car...
Me (interrupting): Um, no, the red car is MY car. Not OURS.
Tess: The red car is OUR car.
Me: MY car.
Tess: Mine?
Me: MINE.
Tess: Ours.

I get the feeling she's getting a little impatient to become the boss of her own car.

April Fools

I'm not normally into April Fools Day. Like, at all. I don't think I've ever planned anything for it. Ever.

But something came over me this year and I decided we should have an April Fools dinner. (I think it's because I got released as a counselor in RS this weekend. Even though I knew it would happen eventually, I didn't think it would be so soon, especially not during such a crazy busy week for RS. It was a bit of a shock for all of us in the presidency. So maybe this dinner was a little RS PTSD? Is it weird that this is how I reacted?)

On the menu:

"Shepherd's Pie"

Complete with Coco Crispies meat, Airheads peas and carrots, and marshmallow fluff mashed potatoes.

Jello Juice.

And meatloaf mashed potatoes.

With mashed potato "frosting" and cherry (tomato) sprinkles.

Spencer caught on to everything pretty quick and was a good sport about it.

Tess was REALLY confused by the Jello. It rocked her little 3 year old mind.

And Cole?  Cole was okay at first - and then he got mad. That boy likes Jello, but he LOVES juice. He was quite upset, and at one point said "WHY IS THIS NOT JUICE? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME!???!??!"

Tess was really, really excited about the cupcakes. She didn't even notice that Spencer refused to eat one. She took a big bite of the frosting and was quite upset. It took a good 15 minutes to convince her to eat anything else. (She had even helped me make the peas and carrots and refused to touch them.)

I even tricked Lance a little bit by putting white chocolate pudding in a sour cream container. Actually, I think he was more alarmed by the off-white color than the fact that I was putting some on my sweet bread. But whatever.

Spencer and Josh quite enjoyed it all, especially because they basically just ate dessert for dinner.

Well, my kids probably won't trust my cooking for a month, but that's okay because they rarely eat what I cook without complaining anyway. At least this time I had a bit of fun!
