We are having the missionaries over for dinner tomorrow, which calls for dessert. (At least in the Madsen household...) When I asked Tess what kind of dessert we should have she said, without a moment of hesitation, "Cake!" Her birthday is coming up, so she has cake on the brain. I had some FABULOUS cake at a baby shower a few weeks ago and had a free sample of delicious carrot cake at Sam's Club last week, so I was game.
I decided to make my cousin's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cake, which is baking in the oven as I type. As Tess and I made the cake (because Tess is ALWAYS in the kitchen when I cook now... it's great... really... it drives me bonkers, but that's okay...)
Anyway, Tess and I were making the cake and Cole sauntered in and asked what we were making.
"CAKE!" Tess happily replied.
"NO," said Cole.
"WAAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAWWAAAAAAA!", replied Tess, much to Cole's delight. He lives for overblown reactions like those.
"We're making cake for dessert tomorrow," I told him.
Cole pondered this for a moment. "Why?"
"Because we're having the missionaries over and I thought it would be nice to have a little dessert."
Cole pondered this some more. "But WHY?"
"Umm... because cake is yummy. And always a good idea."
"But whose birthday is it going to be? Is it going to be Tess's?"
"What? No, you know Tess's birthday is next week."
"BUT WHOSE BIRTHDAY WILL IT BE?!??!"
"Wha...? Oh wait - Cole, you can have cake even if it's not someone's birthday. You can have cake for dessert whenever you want!"
Cole scowled as if I were crazy and wandered off.
Where have I gone so wrong in my parenting that my kids think cake is only for birthdays?!?
