Bedtime Surprise

Each night I sit at the head of Cole's bed and read to him as he putters around the room. (He is not one to sit and listen to a story, but he will wander and listen.)

Last Thursday found me in my customary spot. As I sat reading it started to feel like my bum was getting sweaty. I know. Gross. But then I realized Hey, wait a minute. I'm not hot. At all.

So I stood up and realized that it was not me that was wet, but the bed.

Erlack.

Cole swore up and down that he did not have an accident the night before. But the very light yellow stain and the empty water bottle on his nightstand told a different story.

Fortunately, Lance was around to help strip the bed and put on fresh bedding. I put the water bottle in the kitchen and proclaimed it exiled from the bedroom from that time forth.

Just before I got into the shower Josh came into our bedroom to complain about something. (Every time that kid opened his mouth that evening it was to complain. It had been a long evening.) Lacking all sympathy I said "Well, at least you didn't sit in pee tonight". I'm pretty sure he was already out the door by then, but I felt justified in my comment.

In fact, I kinda wished this had happened earlier in the day so I could have used that line more often. "Oh, you think you've got it bad? I'm the one who sat in pee!" "Come complain to me once you've sat in some pee, okay?"

As I got into the shower I got to thinking. I was PRETTY SURE we were passed the pee-on-mom stage by now. But obviously I am wrong. Then I realized that for the first few years of my life I sat in pee all the time. (I didn't care, but still.) And then once I had kids I sat in pee and other bodily fluids all the time. (Maybe not sat, but got them on me all the time one way or another.) And apparently this phase was not over.

So, with that logic, there was only a 20ish year period of my life when I was NOT sitting in pee.

*sigh*

I bounced these ideas off of Lance, who wisely kept his thoughts to himself as I chewed this over out loud.

The mom job is hard. And gross. And FULL of surprises. Let's just hope we grow out of some of these surprises sooner rather than later.
