Non-Sequitur of the Day

Me: Would you guys like to watch the Superman movie this afternoon?

Spencer: Oooh!  Yeah!

Josh: No.

Me: Why not, Josh?  Superman is cool.

Josh: No.

Me: He can fly, and see through things, and run really fast.  I like Superman.

Josh: I like conifers.

************
I have no idea where that came from or why he said it.  But I've had this song (one of my favorite kid songs ever) since our little conversation.

Great for Munchin'!

The other day we caught Cole with a full mouth and an open bag:

Apparently he had made his way into the storage room, found these coconut marshmallows, and decided it was snack time.

And who can blame him?  It does say right on the bag that they're:

Don't worry - the remaining marshmallows were put to excellent use.

Yes, those are Toasted Coconut and Chocolate Chip Rice Crispie Treats.  Yum.

Have You Ever Been So Tired (part 2)...

... that under the bed looked like a good place for a nap?

Josh has.

I think this was Josh's way of getting back at me.  I had sent him to his room for a time out and he was mad.  When I went to go tell him that he could come out he wasn't anywhere (that I could see) in his room; generally this would have gotten him into BIG trouble, but since I had completely forgotten he was in there and was 10 minutes late and having a bad/lazy mothering moment, I figured I'd let it go.

An hour later Cole and I went into the room to change his diaper.  We were pretty noisy and woke Josh up.

Cole was tickled with the idea of Josh being under the bed.

Just so you know, I do have beds for all of my children.  Although now I'm wondering why, since they seem to prefer not to use them.

Questions

Question: Have you ever taken four kids to Menards to buy eight 10-foot pieces of PVC pipe and approximately 938 PVC pipe fittings?

Answer: Don't.  Really, I'm not even kidding, don't do it.  Learn from my mistakes, people.

************

Question: Have you ever had to threaten your four-year-old with a gruesome death while in Menards when he decides it's a good idea to try to climb the wire shelving that holds literally thousands of PVC pipe fittings?

Answer: I sure hope not.  Because death threats don't work with four-year-olds.  Threats of not going to swimming lessons the next day or not getting dessert?  Now those work.  But only after getting dirty looks from store employees.

************

Question: Do all two-year-old boys forget where the walls in their home are placed and run into them daily?

Answer: In our house they do.  And sometimes they get faint black eyes from it.  Bonus!

************

Question: Do all baby girls HAVE to be held all evening because if not they will absolutely DIE?

Answer: Apparently, yes.  Well, maybe not DIE, but they will certainly holler and scream and cry and fuss and hiccup until you give in and just hold them because if you don't you will certainly go crazy because that baby is not giving up any time soon.  I'm holding one right now, draped over my arm like some sort of accessory, fast asleep and lightly drooling down my arm.

************

Question: Is baby drool ever charming?

Answer: Sometimes.  But only when it is your baby.

************

Question: Do all seven-year-old boys fall to pieces with diva-like tantrums whenever their younger brothers tease them?

Answer: No really, I want to know.  Because they sure do at our house.

************

Question:  Are pollen and other allergy counts always the worst/highest during seasons you can't take any medication for them because you are nursing a baby who drools charmingly?

Answer: Yes. Always.

Father's Day 2011

Our Father's Day festivities began yesterday with the making of the oh-so-sinful Pioneer Woman Milky Way Cake.  Seriously, I didn't realize just how naughty this cake was until I started making it - THREE sticks of margarine and ELEVEN Milky Way bars?!?!  Good grief!  Before it was even done I decided that we would each have a piece or two and then freeze the rest to pawn off on share friends with and neighbors some other time.

I'm pretty sure Josh only wanted to help because candy was involved.  He sure was happy about it, though!

I wasn't kidding about all the butter and sugar.  And this was only the beginning!

Josh was sad that he couldn't just eat the candy bars.  But to his credit he (mostly) kept his fingers out.

Of course Cole decided he needed to get in on the action as well.  While Josh actually did help me a bit, Cole... did not.

Josh was great at stirring the melting candy bars and margarine.  We had a pretty good talk about why he couldn't lick the spatula right then.

Alright, we'll get back to the cake later.

I was able to get a few shots of Lance with all of the kiddos after church today.  We had to do at least one funny-face photo.

Then I was able to get one good regular photo.  Regular meaning Lance and Spencer are smiling, Josh is scowling on purpose, Cole is distracted by something else, and Tess is looking how newborns generally look.

Discussing with Josh why we can't eat just cake all day.  He's not buying any of our reasoning or excuses.

Cole was far too interested in his train book to be bothered looking at the camera.

Oh wait - there's a smile!  I love that cowboy boot tie.  (I made ties for the boys a couple of years ago, but they only fit Cole now.)

Spencer has never been shy for the camera!

Tess and her Daddy.  She bought him that tie especially for today. (I do believe that is the first tie Lance has ever received for Father's Day.)

Knowing she wouldn't be getting any cake, Tess decides to eat her dress.

The boys were so proud of the Father's Day gift they picked out for Lance: a Portal 2 t-shirt!

We ended the evening with the cake, of course.  It was ooey-gooey-messy yumminess. While I wouldn't say it's the best dessert I've ever had, it was still pretty darn good.

We ended the evening with Josh having a temper tantrum stemming from the fact that we wouldn't let him have a third piece. That child...

Happy Father's Day, Lance!

Tess's Blessing

Today was extra special because Tess was finally blessed at church.  It was even more special because it was Father's Day and Tess was the first baby ever blessed in our brand new building.  (Side note: LOVE the new building!  It's so pretty and clean and nice.  Plus, it's only 6 minutes away from our house!)

Our Hoosier Family, the Souths, came to Sacrament Meeting for the blessing.  We are so lucky to have good friends like them!  Both of our families took up an entire pew.  Despite the fact that we have 7 children, ages 7 and under, and 5 of them very active little boys, everyone behaved reasonably well.  I mean, we certainly added to the general din of a large family ward like ours, but we certainly didn't contribute more than our fair share!

I was worried that Cole would freak out during the blessing.  And he did freak out - only it was when Lance left to go pass the sacrament.  So Cole was actually pretty happy during the blessing.  Too happy, in fact; he was sat on my lap and babbled happily the entire time.  I only heard about half of what Lance said.  Oh well, I'm sure it was lovely.

After the meeting we were able to get a few pictures.  Here's our now rather large Madsen family.

Nice ties, boys.

And one with our Hoosier Family.  That pose is pretty awesome there, Spence.

Because this is not my first rodeo, I knew that I probably wouldn't get any pictures of Tess in her blessing outfit after church today.  (I don't know about your family, but things are always a bit crazy after church in our home.  Kids are hungry and grouchy, mom and dad are tired, and baby always makes some sort of mess and wants to be fed... NOW.)  So I decided to dress her up and take a few pictures a few days ago.  I could never get her to smile, but she's still pretty dang cute.

Did you notice to the cute headband?  After my post last week I got lots of good ideas from friends and family about what to use.  This winner was from Bekah, who told me to use white nylons.  GENIUS!  Not only are they cheap, but they're soft and gentle on baby's head.  And they look pretty great, too.  Thanks, Bekah!

I had extra roses, so I also made her a little wrist corsage.  And she is just the perfect size for the dress right now.  I'm lovin' all that lace!

Ohmigoodness, I don't know how, but Lance and I sure make darling babies.  (C'mon, you know it's true...)

Isn't her little mouth so cute in this one?

Allllmmmost a smile...

Half smile or half smirk?

Of course we had to try on the little bonnet as well.  I liked the headband better.

Tess did, too.

Suddenly, a random Cole appears!

I tried to bribe him to go away.  It was not very effective.  I could hardly get Tess to look at the camera again.  (And who can blame her?  Cole is not exactly gentle around Tess.  I'd keep an eye on him, too!)

One last shot.  Look, her cheeks and chins are filling in, like a proper Madsen baby.  We're not exactly starving her here.

Josh then had to join in on the action.  Shortly thereafter the boys decided to have a battle to see who could kiss Tess the most.  Tess lost and the photo session of decidedly over.
