Have You Ever Been So Tired...

...that you had a tantrum, threw crayons everywhere, and passed out on the living room floor?

Tess definitely has.

New Shoes

"Mommy! Look at my new shoes!"

"Goodness! Those are... fancy!"

"They are pritty."

"Are you Cinderella? Are those your glass slippers?"

"No."

"Where did you get them?"

"From the house."

She later lost one of them and I asked her if Prince Charming was going to find it for her.  She looked at me like I was a loon. (You know, like I'm the one wearing baggies on my feet.)

Spoon Me

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (Norther California, to be precise), my mother and I went to the Mikasa outlet in the town next to ours and bought brand new flatware for my wedding.  She was way more excited about this than I was, because she was older and wiser and knew what's what.  Not that I wasn't appreciative - I was really grateful!  But I was also young, childless, getting married in a month, and in the midst of my final semester of college. Flatware wasn't really on my radar.

Fast forward fourteen and a half years, and flatware was finally on my radar. The Mikasa stuff had held up well, but it was starting to really show its age.  Actually, it started to show its age about a year ago, but I ignored it until last week when I found a set on Crate&Barrel's website that I actually liked that was also on sale! Score!

The flatware came today, but I didn't have a chance to open it until right before dinner. I tore open the packaging, snapped a quick picture for social media (because, priorities), and then put it all in the sink so I could wash it before we ate. I remember thinking it seemed like a lot of pieces at the time, but quickly got distracted by something else.

After dinner I started loading it into the drawer. Umm... there was a lot. (It's also way prettier than it looks here. It's a timeless, pretty pattern that I really like. And it's heavy and sturdy and just feels good to hold, which counts for a lot, I think.)  ((See?  Flatware matters to me now.))

After mulling over it for a while, and after quite a bit of teasing from Lance about how silverware obviously confuses me, and kids, don't bother your mother while she's counting the silverware because we all know she has problems with that... haha. Anywho, I remembered that while I originally thought I ordered a place setting of 12, I actually ordered a place setting of 18. There were 8 place settings in each box, but I really only wanted 12 so I thought I would just order 4 more of each piece, but then realized it wasn't that much more to just order another box.  So I did.  But then for some reason I ordered 2 more of each piece; I'm not sure why, but it was a Sunday afternoon and I was dealing with Tess, so we'll just blame her.

The thing is, I had way, WAY, WAY more than just 18 teaspoons. I counted them all out again and I had 34!  THIRTY-FOUR!!  Lance teased me some more, but seriously, I KNOW I didn't order 16 extra spoons! (He was secretly happy, though. We're always running out of clean teaspoons, which makes for sad cereal mornings.)

The thing is, I had already taken them all out of their packaging and washed them, so I was pretty sure Crate&Barrel wouldn't want them back. But I felt guilty because I didn't pay for them.  So I got online and chatted with a super friendly Crate&Barrel associate.  She kept thanking me for my honesty, which was nice, but she also kind of freaked out when I told her the total number of extra spoons.  Not freaked out in a bad way, but in a way that I could tell she found this all really amusing. (I like to think of her chatting with her friends in the break room about this crazy spoon chat she had to deal with.)

Long story short, Crate&Barrel sincerely thanked me for letting them know what happened (inventory reasons), but they were more than happy to let me just keep the spoons.

I think it's safe to say we will probably never run out of clean cereal spoons again!

Princess Tess

An actual exchange I just had with Tess:

Me: Hello, Miss Tess!

Tess: No, not "Miss Tess". It's "Princess Tess".

Me: Noted.

I blame this on Frozen and the fact that Disney Princesses have been on the brain lately since I just scored reservations to have dinner in Cinderella's castle with Cinderella herself and several of her princess friends. I suspect princess fever is just beginning...

The Same Thing

An actual conversation in the kitchen this evening:

Cole: Mmmm! I smell cookies!  Are you making cookies?

Me: Um, no. But I am baking squash... and that's kinda the same thing! Yum!

I turn on the oven light to show him the roasting acorn squash.

Cole: What?!  No!  NO!!! WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT??!??!?

Sometimes I really love teasing my kids.

Graffiti Arteest

So yeah.  I can't remember if I blogged about this or not, but a while ago Tess kept finding random pens and pencils around the house (you know, the ones I kept telling Spencer and Josh to put away after homework...) and would doodle on random walls.  Nothing too bad until she found a random blue marker and went to town on a wall in the storage room.

Fortunately for Tess (unfortunately for my parenting skills), I am not in the storage room often enough to remember to force help Tess to clean up her mess as I have with all of her other "art projects".  Apparently Cole took this to mean that the wall was fair game.  I went downstairs this morning and discovered his name scrawled just above some of Tess's work.

The following conversation ensued:

Me (in my "I mean business" voice): Cole!  Get down here!

Cole (in his "pretending to be 15 already" voice): What?

Me: Why did you write on the wall?

Cole: No.  I didn't.

Me: Cole.  It says your name.

Cole: No it doesn't.

Me: Cole, you're not in trouble. Just don't do it again.  Anywhere.  Okay?

Cole: I didn't.

Me: Whatever.  Don't write your name anywhere except on paper.  Paper that I say you can write on.

Cole (already running away): Okay.

Hopefully this will be the last of it. My storage room is starting to look like a Los Angeles underpass.

Halloween 2014

Poor Halloween.  After all the hoopla of doughnut parties and preschool parades and trunk-or-treats, actual Halloween night seemed kind of anti-climactic.

The abysmal weather didn't help, either. Low 30s, rain and snow flurries, strong gusts of wind.  Yuck.

We had the Reams over for dinner again, which was great fun.  Not that I took any pictures of them to actually prove they were here.  But who else would I make spider deviled eggs and black & orange kabobs for?

They provided the pizza and the good conversation. :)

All the kiddos were stuffed into their winter gear, with their costumes on top of that.  I only got one picture and it isn't even that good. But it was too cold and wet to get my camera out most of the time!

We all made it around one side of the 1/4 mile circle.  Then Tess, Cole, Gigi, and I stayed home to pass out candy.  The rest of the boys only made it around the other side of the circle and called it good - far less houses than in year's past.  We had considerably fewer trick or treaters than normal, which meant more candy for those who did venture out!

Aren't our jack o'lanterns cool. Lance did the one of the left and I did the one on the right.

Right before dinner I discovered that poor Cole had a fever of 100.4.  Since I knew he would be bundled up from head to toe, and because he would be SUPER disappointed if I kept him home, I decided to give him some Tylenol and let him go.  It was a good choice.  The Tylenol helped him feel well enough to try to eat an entire Hershey's bar in one sitting. (He couldn't do it.)

As a side note to my last post, I'm still feeling great!  Hooray!  Now I'm wondering if he just had a little reaction to the flu shot he got on Monday.  If that's the case, then I should be okay since I got my shot, too. Hopefully...

We all spent a good hour or more eating candy, chatting, and giving candy to the few trick or treaters who came to our door.  Not the most exciting of Halloweens, but I still enjoyed it! (And the kids don't seem disappointed at all that they didn't get as much candy as usual.  Win!)
