My 31st Birthday

My 31st birthday was pretty good. What? It was pretty good. (Nothing could compare to last year's birthday!)

Anyways, this birthday was a birthday of treats. First, the boys treated me by sleeping in 30 whole minutes. (Hey, I'll take what I can get.)

Then, I treated myself to a new hair color. It's hard to tell in the picture, but it's darker and redder. I like it. I think. Give me a few days to get used to it.

Next I treated myself by 'watching' my kids make my birthday cake. Remember my rule about no one should have to make their own birthday cake? Well, the other day I brought up the fact that I was planning on just buying some really good ice cream for my birthday. Spencer was appalled. His exact words were something along the lines of "But Mommy, you HAVE to have a birthday cake. You HAVE to!" I tried to explain that I didn't want to make my own cake, to which he replied, "I'll make it!" So there you go.

We decided to make Chocolate Cherry Cola Cake. Yum.

First, the boys stemmed the cherries. It was really hard not to eat the cherries.

Then they poured everything in the bowl.

Yes, that is Wild Cherry Pepsi Spencer is pouring in. At first I was hesitant about using a caffeinated soda in the cake. Not that I don't drink caffeinated soda - just not really while I'm pregnant. (Hey, if you can't be a little medically paranoid while your pregnant, when can you be?) I read somewhere once that caffeine can lower the birth weight of your baby.

I thought of this as the Wild Cherry Pepsi called my name and said, "Drink me, Maren!" I resisted.

And then I remembered how freakishly large Josh was.

I poured myself a tall, frosty glass and went to town. (Hey, you carry a 10 pound baby to term and then you can judge.)

Anyways.

The boys had to take turns turning on the mixer.

While the cake was baking the boys even helped me clean up.

Josh told me no uncertain terms to back off - he'd take care of cleaning the bowl.

We mixed the extra-sticky frosting (vanilla frosting and marshmallow cream) in one of my new stainless steel mixing bowls. (Thanks, Dad and Susie!)

Look, they even have rubber bottoms so they won't slip. Love it!

We frosted the cake, but it just didn't look right.

But, as I've said time and time again - sprinkles make everything look better! (I should needlepoint that on a pillow or something.)

I didn't have 31 candles, so I put 3 and 1 candles. I thought I was clever; Spencer thought I was four.

Geez, you'd think this was a cake of the month post. But it's not, because I didn't make the cake. So there you go. (Don't worry - Spencer's birthday is coming up.)

Back to the birthday fun.

In the afternoon I was treated to an exploding diaper from Josh and a rare accident from Spencer. Then I had the treat of doing some laundry. Wait...

For dinner I was treated to McAllister's Deli. Yum. Because I luurrve sandwiches. (Plus, I had a $5 coupon. Score!)

Finally, I was treated to my birthday cake and presents! As you can see in the video, Josh beat me by a split second to blowing out the candles. Smooth, Josh.

I got some great presents this year. My favorite is the statue that Lance gave me. Too cute.

And now I'm snuggled up on the couch watching my Thursday night NBC line up.

Okay, this was a pretty great 31st birthday.

Happy birthday Maren! I feel slightly silly because I always think your birthday is at the end of the month. Oh well, glad you got some super cool stuff though!!! As well as some deserved caffeine.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! Sorry I didn't realize it earlier - I'm a bad friend like that. It looks like you had a lot of fun and got good presents. I guess it's a good thing I drank a bit of caffeine when I was pregnant with Bria - she was 8 lbs 2 weeks early - and that was big enough for me (Bella was only 6.3#) Here's hoping for a small baby!
