Heaven only knows why. He asks for one often. He even wanted the Easter Bunny to bring him one. I have tried, on several occasions, to explain to him that you have to pay for a credit card. As in, it's not just free money - whatever you spend with the credit card, you have to pay back.
I actually think he gets this, but he doesn't care. He's always talking about all the things he would buy if he had his own credit card.
For all our sakes, I hope this means he'll grow up and get a good job in the financial sector, and not that he'll down in debt and want to live in our basement when he's 34.
This is what he looked like today when I, once again, told him he was too young for a credit card.
Sometimes it's really hard to be a five year old without a credit card.

Maybe for a special occasion you get him one of those pre-paid cards as a gift. You can get those at most drug stores.
Also, you could blow his mind by telling him how by the time he's old enough for a credit card they won't be in card form, but the RID chips in his smartphone.
My kids were devastated to learn that they couldn't save up for their own cell phone. I explained to them about contracts and credit and being a minor child with no job (and left out the part about pre-paid and disposable cells, obviously.) and it was all very sad.
On the bright side, we have fully indoctrinated our kids about the evils of credit. Q tells us "I'm never having a credit card!" We hope he will still mean it when he is grown.
