Anyways, I kept meaning to take these pictures a while ago, but the bathroom was always in shambles after the kids got ready for school and I didn't really want to clean it all up for a couple of pictures.
Then I realized that I would never take any pictures if I was waiting for the dang room to be perfectly clean for more than 5 seconds. So I wiped down the counter and toilet, hung the towels, and called it good.
First, what the bathroom looked like before:
So I have no real memory of taking this video. Why did I do a video? I don't know. But that's all I have.
Oh - and this picture that shows how bad the caulking had gotten on top of the tub. (It's kinda hard to tell. Trust me, it was no bueno.)
And really, the bathroom was not that bad. I just didn't like it. I never really liked the turquoise paint. (It was better than the Big Bird Yellow it was when we bought the house. But only just.) And the cabinets still had the yellow duck knobs. And the shower curtain and rod were getting pretty worn. And since I have just so much free time now (sarcastic font), I decided it was time to redo the bathroom.
I let the kids choose the shower curtain (well, from a pre-selected group), and was surprised at their choice. I totally thought they'd choose the one with sharks or fish. They must be my kids - they like patterns like me.
The walls are now a much more neutral and calming light grey. I bought the best paint possible, so hopefully it'll stand the test of time. I made these signs in 10 minutes in Photoshop one night on a whim because I found these frames randomly sitting on my office desk. I really like them. Whether or not their instructions are followed remains to be seen. (Blech.)
They also got new towels, which are this lovely dark shade of blue. Cole and Tess were pretty excited about this - they had been using some pretty old and worn towels for a while now. Josh just complained about them, as he is wont to do.
I bought a new rod and even paid for fancy metal rings. They just look so nice and move so well. I figured we could afford the $10 they cost! (That's how you know when you're doing okay financially - you can afford the metal curtain rings.)
I also added a shelf above the toilet. I really wanted to find something cute to put up there with the toilet paper but couldn't find anything I loved at all my usual haunts. (Hobby Lobby, Target, etc.) But then while cleaning out the toy closet I found these awesome plastic dinosaurs. A couple of coats of spray paint (which I already had) later and I think they look great.
I had originally toyed with the idea of taking out the vanity, mainly because of this:
Yep, the kids have splashed so much water all over the floor that over time the side has warped. And I'm not sure what happened when Lance caulked it last, but good heavens. Plus, the current one has no drawers and the cabinets underneath the sink are pretty much a waste of space. But I looked and looked and the only one I could find that I loved had a Carrara marble top and cost just shy of $500.
Nope.
Did you know we're getting an IKEA only an hour away by this time next year? Happy happy day! Maybe I'll find a decent looking vanity there. But until then, this one will have to do.
So instead of splurging on a new vanity I splurged on a new light fixture. It looks SO MUCH BETTER than that old one. (See the video.) I was looking up lighting online and the one that used to be in there literally only cost $20. Not that cheap can't be good, but in this case it really just looked bad cheap. I LOVE these schoolhouse globes so much! They look so classic to me. I wish I could use these in all the bathrooms of our house, but can't justify that expense. Yet.
All in all I spent less than $200 and I think it looks great. Hooray for home improvement projects that turn out so well!
