Monkey House Meltdowns - Vacation Days 3.5-4

After church we enjoyed Sunday dinner. Josh especially enjoyed dessert - Drumsticks. Yum! (Kudos to Spencer for giving him his leftovers.)

That evening everyone loaded into my dad's rented mini van. Well, everyone except poor Lance. Hey, someone has to work in order to support my extravagant lifestyle! We trekked up to Chicago with only one stop for an emergency diaper change. (I had forgotten to change Josh's diaper before we left and realized that it hadn't been changed since right before church. Gross.)

That night we pulled into the Best Western hotel in Evanston. This hotel was only about a million times nicer than the one in Sandusky, and considerably cheaper, too.

I was sharing a room with the boys and was a bit worried about getting them to sleep. It was quite late and they were both cranky. Things actually went quite well. There was a niche in the wall that Josh's baby cage (i.e. Port-a-Crib) fit into perfectly, and Spencer was really excited to sleep in his own big bed. I went to sleep that night feeling a little smug about what a good mom I was.

Boy, was I in for a rude awakening. No, really. I was quite rudely awakened.

Picture this: it's 5:30am. The room is perfectly dark and we're all sleeping peacefully. La la la la. I love sleeping in hotel rooms with the air conditioning on high, snuggled beneath the blankets! Suddenly, a three year old, in what could only be a deranged stupor, turns on the very bright bedside lamp and starts yelling at the top of his lungs "I can't see! Too bright! I can't see!", while stumbling around the room as if drunk. I turned off the light and tried to calm Spencer down, but the damage was already done: Josh was wide awake and there was no way anyone was going back to sleep any time soon.

I took a lot of time bathing the boys and getting ready, but by 7am I was calling the family to let them know that we had to go get breakfast - and soon. We walked a few blocks to a cute cafe called LePeep Pancake House. Spencer was trouble the whole way, but I figured that was because he was hungry. Breakfast was alright, but not nearly as good as it looked. (Side note: Isn't that so disappointing? When food doesn't taste nearly as good as it looks? This food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. It was... meh.)

Anywho, Spencer's obnoxiousness only got worse throughout the day. We decided to visit the Lincoln Park Zoo, which meant riding on the L. Spencer was pretty excited about riding on a train, and only had to be reminded about 38 times to sit in his seat or face the consequences. :) After walking about a mile from the train to the zoo, we passed a park full of playground equipment and Spencer had his first fit of the day about not playing on it. At that second I got a chill, a sort of mommy premonition that something wicked that way comes. (Came, whatever. You know the song. And, if you're a mom, the feeling.) In other words, my Mommy-senses were tingling, and they sensed danger.

I was right. We saw maybe 1/4 of the zoo. Spencer behaved only for the reptile house, where he got to pet a turtle and a snake. The rest of the time was spent whining, crying, yelling, and just being... a jerk. Yep, I went there. I said it. He was acting like a 3 year old jerk. In his defense, he had only gotten about half the amount of sleep he was used to, it was hot and humid, and he hadn't really seen his daddy in nearly 3 days. But it was really hard to keep my cool while he was acting... like such a jerk! The pictures are quite deceptive of his attitude that day!

The zoo excursion ended early. Spencer was so awful that I wanted to leave him with the gorillas. I'm sure he could have held his own in the clan; or maybe they could have taught him some manners. At any rate, I was at my wits end with him. Kyle and Kevin wisely escaped south to the Museum of Science and Technology while Dad, Susie, the boys and I headed back to the hotel. Both of the boys fell asleep in the stroller on the way back to the train and slept the entire train ride.

(Side note again(!): my stroller totally paid for itself during this trip. LOVE IT. I can honestly say that not all of us would have survived the trip without it.)

Once we got back to the hotel the plan was for Dad and Susie to (graciously) take Spencer swimming in the pool while I stayed in the room so Josh could nap. Neither worked. The pool was closed and Josh refused to sleep after such as long and restful 45 minute nap in the stroller and on the train! So the swimmers went to a beach on the lake while I tried to keep Josh from hurting himself in the not-so-baby-proof hotel room. I remember thinking, as I distracted Josh from the standing lamp for the 76th time, that I most certainly did not come to Chicago to spend all my time yelling at Spencer and being stuck in a hotel room.

That night we ate at Giordanos for some world famous stuffed pizza. Yummy. Really yummy. It was fun to be with my family, except for the three year old fit-throwing time bomb who had to go to the bathroom three times during the meal. (And each time we walked back I had to remind him that it was most certainly not polite to touch everyone's tables as we passed!)

That night the boys were both asleep, at my insistence, by 8pm. I threatened Spencer with an eternal cartoon ban that he was not, under any circumstances, to turn on the light when he woke up the next morning. The next day had to be better, right?

Tron Dragon and the Bates Motel - Vacation days 1-2.5

Our Roper family vacation began on the evening of the 16th with a family portrait. These are the first professional family pictures we've had taken since Dad and Susie got married almost two years ago. Lance and I also got some of just the two of us since it was our seven year anniversary that day. (Side note: SEVEN years?!? We rock! I love you, meat!) I think they all turned out really well and will post them as soon as the prints come in.

(Another side note: I had my first allergy attack of the season that afternoon, complete with scratchy throat, faucet face, and swollen nose. Not exactly photo-friendly. Luckily, I was able to get my hands on some Claritin-D in time to look decent for the photo shoot. I was in a drug-induced haze for most of the trip, but at least I could breath!)

The next afternoon my brothers, Kyle & Kevin, Lance and I started our pilgrimage to Cedar Point, Mecca of the roller coaster world. Okay, it was really more of a pilgrimage for Kevin, our resident roller coaster junkie, but Lance and I were really excited just to get out of the house for two nights without the boys! (My dad and Susie offered to not only pay for the entire trip, but also to watch the boys for us. Are they AWESOME or what?)

Anywho, we drove six hours to... scenic... Sandusky, OH. Okay, the parts we saw were pretty ghetto, but I'm sure there are nice parts that we missed. I had booked our rooms at the Comfort Inn; online the pictures and most of the reviews had been decent. Plus, they were pretty pricey rooms, and I had stayed at good Comfort Inns before, so I figured we'd be okay. WRONG!!!! I won't go into the gory details because you can read them all here in the complaint letter I mailed to them this morning. Every word is true!

(Side note the third: I'm all about writing letters of complaint. Even if they don't solve the problem, at least I feel better! Yes, this one is a bit dramatic, but I decided to write it that way for the following reasons:
  • I don't expect to get any response from them, and figured I might as well make the letter more interesting blog-wise
  • They probably get lots of boring complaint letters; perhaps a more interesting one might get their attention
  • I was hopped up on Claritin-D when I wrote it
So now Comfort Inn is on my blackball list, joining such rotgut companies as American Airlines, U-Haul, and Omaha, Nebraska. Boo! Hiss! Okay, Omaha isn't a company, but I still hate it because three years ago while moving to Lafayette I got lost on their crazy freeway we-don't-believe-in-signs-for-out-of-towners road construction while driving a U-Haul. Hell hath no fury...)

Okay, stay on target...

Rather than spend the evening at the Dis-Comfort Inn we went to see The Simpsons Movie, which was pretty good. It won't win any Oscars, but it was definitely entertaining; like a really good Simpson's episode, only longer. The hotel was disappointing - Cedar Point was not. It... was... AWESOME!!! I didn't take my camera, because who wants to lug a camera around a theme park all day? But we all had a great time together. Lots of waiting in line, of course, but the weather was absolutely perfect (low 70's, minimal sun, slight breeze) and the company was good. (Even if Kevin still refuses to admit that Harry would kick Spidey's trash.) Here's my list of highlights:
  1. Millennium Force - Best. Coaster. Ever. 310 feet high, 6595 feet of track, 92 mph. Need I say more?
  2. Top Thrill Dragster - Scariest. Coaster. Ever. The picture doesn't do it justice. First you go strait up 420 feet, and then you go down, with a barrel roll just for fun. Oh, and by the way, you do it at 120mph. (0 to 120mph in 4 seconds!)
  3. Iron Dragon - most entertaining coaster, but only because of my brothers' commentary during the whole (comparatively slow) ride. We all called it the "Tron Dragon" because that's what the font on the sign looked like it said.
  4. Cedar Creek Mine Ride - Lamest coaster ever. 'Thanks' again to Kevin for making us ride it. :) The only scary part was when we were stalled on a small hill and the brakes let go for half a second. Lame!
  5. maXair - Best thrill ride of the day. It doesn't look that scary until you're on it - way fun!!
  6. Wave Swinger - I absolutely love the swings! It's the closest to flying you can get. Too bad it made Lance sick.
Okay, enough of the coaster commentary. I'm sure that's about as fun as watching someone else's vacation slides.

The day was great until the very end. We had been in line for the Raptor for just over an hour when it started sprinkling. Soon we heard the most dreaded announcement in coaster enthusiast culture: the ride was temporarily delayed due to weather. We waited for another 30 minutes hoping and praying that it would open, but we finally (and wisely) gave up and called it a day. Such a sad, sad way to end the day. Poor Kevin didn't get to reach his goal of riding every major coaster in the park. (But now we have a great excuse for another trip!) Realizing that we had forgotten where we had parked added insult to injury, although we found the car in about 5 minutes.

Despite that final heartbreak, we were all quite pleased with the day.

We escaped our hotel early the next morning in order to make it back to Lafayette in time for church.

More to follow...

Home at last!

I am finally back from a whirlwind Roper family vacation. I'd love to post all about it tonight, but can't for the following reasons:

  • I have a 675 page book that I am editing, and am only on page 90. My boss has been politely hinting that she would like the first chapter soon.
  • I am in the middle of a laundry marathon.
  • Josh is crawling everywhere and simply cannot be trusted alone.
  • I'm feeling pretty lazy.
But I can tell you that most of the trip was pretty fun. There was honestly never a dull moment. Here are a few highlights to whet your whistle for my next few posts:

  • Going from 0 to 120 mph in 4 seconds
  • Spider infested hallways
  • Riding the L for the first time
  • Monkey house melt-downs
  • Swimming in spit
  • Participating in the Chicago Tour de Potty
  • The most dangerous poonami ever
'Til next time...

Mirror Mirror

Hooray! I finally got the standing mirror of my dreams! Okay, maybe I haven't dreamt about mirrors, but I do really like it; it's a definite step above the $10 Wal-Mart college-apartment mirror I almost had to settle for.

I've been eyeing it since May, when Leath Furniture started their going out of business sale. (Yeah, that was four months ago and they're STILL in business and STILL having the sale.) Anywho, I went in the other day because word on the street was that they really were going out of business soon and I wanted to see how much the mirror was. I was able to talk the salesman into giving it to me for 50% off, which made the mirror look all the better to me. So I picked it up yesterday and put it together this morning. I love it!

Now I just need to get some more color on the walls. Any suggestions?

Feasting Upon The Word

Newly mobile babies are dangerous. Mainly because you forget just how much trouble they can get into in a short amount of time. I quickly remembered this today as Josh became much more mobile! (And still no pictures or video - he just stops, sits, and looks at the camera. Stinker.)

Anywho, Josh got into all sorts of stuff today. His favorites included the media cabinet, taking the door stops off of the walls, toilet paper, and magazines. I was out of the room literally for one minute, with Josh on the opposite side of the room from the magazine rack, and came back to this:

Okay, it doesn't look that bad. But that's because I smoothed out a lot of the damage before I thought about using this as blog fodder. Plus, he ate a large chunk of one of President Monson's talks, but I didn't discover that until after I put the camera away. I suspect I will be finding parts of the talk in diapers for the next few days. Mmmmm... conference edition...

Lifetime Goal: Accomplished!

I actually have a list of lifetime goals on my Palm. Some of them are pretty big: go back to Jerusalem, spend a month in Europe, host a gourmet dinner party, publish a cook book, etc. Some of them aren't as grandiose: finish my quilt (I've been working on it bit by bit for 3 years!), sing Kereoke, learn to make great pastries, etc.

I finished one of my smaller goals today: buy a chocolate at a chocolate shop. I know this is crazy - who's never bought a chocolate before? That would be me. I've always been too cheap/frugal to buy a single chocolate. It's doubly crazy because I went to BYU and they have a great assortment of handmade chocolates in the bookstore, notorious for being the downfall of many a co-ed. When I lived in Salt Lake the route Spencer and I would take for our daily walks went right by a chocolate shop - but again, I never even went in.

So for some still unknown reason I decided that today would be the day I would accomplish my goal! The boys and I went to the Farmer's Market and then went strait to McCord's Candies. With Spencer's help we picked out four chocolates and a chocolate covered marshmallow, spending a whopping $2.80. Hey big spender! It was 9:30am, so I wasn't really in the mood for a lot of sweets, but naturally Spencer was. So of course I had to taste a chocolate, too! They tasted like sweet, sweet, pricey success. :)

Okay, I have another silly confession/goal. I have never picked up the phone, ordered a pizza, and had it delivered to where I live. Yeah, I know - it's completely un-American. I am totally letting the terrorists win. Cheapskate card again - it's expensive! Plus, we make pizzas around here all the time - it's faster to make one than to wait for an order! Growing up we NEVER ordered pizza, and when I went to college I never got in the habit. (Starving student!) Oh sure, I've been out for pizza lots of times. And we love Papa Murphy's Take 'n Bake. But it's not quite the same, is it?

So here are my questions for you:

1. What are your goals, big or small?
2. If I ordered a pizza, who should I order it from?

Kitchen Help

Joshie got so dirty during lunch today that I decided the easiest thing would be to strip him down and stick him in the sink. Spencer heard us and decided he needed to come in and "help". The two of them are so cute together!

They got water everywhere, and for a second I just about stopped them. But then I figured it was just water - it could only clean the kitchen at this point! (And with family coming into town on Thursday, I need lots of help cleaning!)

In other news Josh has finally started to crawl. Hooray! He won't go very far unless he has the right motivation (i.e. food), but it's only a matter of time before he's all over the house. It's funny to see him trying to move all of that baby fat everywhere! Too bad he wouldn't do it for the camera - but I'll keep it out and make sure to get some pics of him in the next few days.
