February Funk

It is a well known fact that February is not my favorite month.  This year is no different.

Oh, nothing horrible has happened.  And I don't see anything too awful on the horizon.  But I find myself in a February Funk that I just can't seem to shake.  (This actually started in January, but January Funk just sounds stupid.)

Maybe it's because the holidays are long over and there's not really anything big to look forward to until Tess's birthday in April.  And February is cold and dark and so hard to love.

I've been thinking about this blog a lot lately, and about my writing.  I haven't been posting as much because I just can't seem to find the inspiration I usually have to write.  I just don't want to write lately, which is very unusual for me.  This makes me feel weird and out of sorts, but even recognizing this doesn't make me want to write.

And the whole "doing something you don't want to do will eventually make you want to do it" idea?  Doesn't really work in this situation.  I've tried.  My writing was terrible.

My philosophy for life is that you can find humor in just about any situation.  Thus all the posts about all the awfully funny things my family does.  But I just can't seem to find the humor anymore.  Is it because my kids aren't doing anything humorously appalling any more?  Or is it because a woman can only take cleaning up so many poop accidents before she starts losing her sense of humor and wallowing in self-pity instead?  (I'm not wallowing.  But perhaps I should try it out.  It sounds nice.)

I'm not depressed.  At least I don't think I am.  In fact, I'm pretty happy.  I've been exercising regularly again and eating less and better food and playing with my kids and cleaning the house and doing stuff for Young Womens and planning fun parties and reading my scriptures and just living life.

But I'm still in a funk.

I think I need a vacation.  (Oh wait - I'm taking one in March!  But that's soooo far away!) Or perhaps a good nap is needed?  Nope, I actually had a decent one yesterday.

So if my posting is sporadic for the next little while, it's February's fault.  Hopefully my mood will start to thaw come spring.

Tess's Pretty

When my dad came to visit last month he brought some of my mom's old jewelry.  Nothing nice - just a few things he thought Tess might like to play with.

Tess has fallen in love with an especially... unique... necklace.  She calls it her "pretty'.

Here's what the pendant looks like.  I could probably get some money for it on eBay since it's totally retro-vintage whatever.

But I could never take away this girl's "pretty".  (Ignore the mountain of clean laundry on my bed.   Or come and fold it.  Please?)

I also got crazy the other morning and decided to actually do something with Tess's hair.  Tess does not like having her hair combed.  At all.  But I was able to distract her long enough to do this.

Nothing fancy, but super cute.  Of course, 20 minutes later she pulled both of them out while I was in the shower.  Punk kid.

Pancakes

I made a very lovely pan of homemade enchiladas for dinner, complete with lots of cheese and homemade sauce.  I was planning to smother mine with leftover homemade guacamole from the Super Bowl.

On the way home from the orthodontist I was informed by two young boys that it is national pancake day and that it was their right - nay - their patriotic duty to have pancakes for dinner.  And lots of 'em.

It's hard to argue with that.

So the enchiladas were put in the fridge and the pancake griddle was put on the counter.

Tess helped make 'em.

Josh helped choose the most unhealthy toppings he could find.

And all the kids helped eat 'em.

Don't be fooled by the look.  He's just a punk with pictures sometimes.

Where's Spencer? We didn't give him any.

Just kidding - I just never got a picture of him because I was eating at the same time.

Body Language

Over the last month or so Tess has really gotten into naming body parts.  She especially likes parts of the face, and all of us are always having her name them for us because she sounds so dang cute with her little baby lisp.

"Ahys.  Eehas. Teef.  Haihr. Chihn."

But I suspect the boys have gotten a little too involved with helping Tess name body parts.

When I change diapers and lift up little bums I usually say "Bummies up! Bummies down! Bummies all around!"  I did that this afternoon when Tess said, as clear as day, "No.  That's a butt."

Charming.

Grumpy

In a pretty spectacular display of grumpiness, Tess threw her entire plate of lunch across the kitchen today.

Judge Cole gave her full marks for distance and form.   (Direct quote: "Wow.")

Judge Mom says she crossed a line.  (Direct quote: "You've just crossed a line, young lady.")

Tessie disagreed with the call. (Direct quote: "NO!")

Penalty? No lunch and an early nap time.

.......

Pretty sure these two are related.

Valentine's Day Sign & Printables

Today I felt a little crafty.  Not crafty devious - crafty creative.  (I get enough crafty devious from my kids.)  I had been thinking about a sign I found on Pinterest that I wanted to make for Valentine's Day.

Isn't it cute?  But I had neither the time nor the felt to make it.

Not to be deterred, I instead decided to make an easy and cute Valentine's Day sign.  I started with this random broken clock I got at Goodwill a while ago for $2.  I didn't buy it to be a clock, in case you were wondering. (My Big Ben decorating scheme days are long gone.) (Please don't think I had a Big Ben decorating scheme.) I just really liked the frame.

Then I poked around online and found a Valentine's Day printable that I liked.  (I was too lazy to make one.)  I had to tweak the size of the image to fit my frame, in case you were wondering.  Since I didn't have any paper that was 10x10" I decided to print it as 8x8.  I covered Big Ben with some brown wrapping paper and put it all in the frame. Because of where I wanted to hang it I had to use ribbon to hang it.  Fortunately, I had some pretty red satin ribbon in my bits-o-ribbon drawer.

What do you think?  I think it turned out pretty cute.

I hung it on the coat closet by our front entrance.  Nary a man/boy in the house has commented on it, as was expected, but Tess has pointed at it and gibbered a bit, so I'll take that as a compliment.

But then I found this printable and wanted to use it in a frame I have on my bookshelf, so I decided to get less lazy a make a few printables to go with it.  So I did.

Not so bad, right?  They get the job done.  (The job being helping me to feel like I was crafty enough for one day.)
