Tessisms as of Late

Me: You are quite the snarky little lady today, Tess.
Tess: I'm not snarky! AND I'M NOT A LADY! I'm a sister.

Tess: What's "issues" mean?
Me: Um, usually issues are like problems.
Tess: Well, I've been having some real issues lately.

Me: Tess, calm down! What's the problem?
Tess: I just can't handle Cole anymore! He is too much for me.

(While watching a cheesy puppy documentary on Netflix.)
Tess: I wish I was one of those.
Me: What, a dog?
Tess (dreamily): Yeah...
Lance: What kind of dog would you be?
Tess: A fast one.

Tess (quite alarmed): I'm losing my noise!
Me: You're what now?
Tess (in a raspy voice): I'm losing my noise! My noise! My sound is gone!
Me: Oh, your voice. You're losing your voice?
Tess: Yeah, my noise is gone.

100th Day

Yesterday was the 100th day of school for this school year. Tess's class had all sorts of activities, including making this book. I thought her answers (and pictures) were very telling of her personality right now.

"I would eat 100 pizzas."

"I would not eat 100 pastas." (Notice mom's mean frown.)

"I wish I had 100 new toys."

"I do not want 100 old toys."

"If I had $100, I would buy toys." (Clearly, this girl likes her toys.)

"In 100 seconds I can hop 104 times, count to 108, write my name 16 times, blink 105 times."

Kindergarten is cute.

Purdue Jazz Festival

Today I chaperoned some of the Jazz Band kids at the Purdue Jazz Band festival. It was interesting! I still feel like a total band N00B, so all things band are still a bit of a mystery to me.

They started out by playing 3 of their songs for some judges. Only, they weren't judging - there were no prizes to be one. I don't know the word for these guys. They're REALLY into jazz and took lots of notes on each performance, and then gave the band a review on what they did well and what they could improve upon. (I must be tired. I cannot for the life of me think of their title. Oh well. You get what I mean, right?)

Spencer played piano for the first piece. He's getting so big!

Those are the reviewers in front of me. They'd talk into their little voice recorders and swing and bop to the music. They were REALLY into it. I mean, REALLY. For a middle school band. Those men were dedicated! (That's what you'd want, though, right?)

Here they are getting a little instruction. It was actually really interesting and made me realize how untrained my ear really is, at least as far as the intricacies of jazz music goes.

Spencer even got some one-on-one instruction! He's really learned a lot about music this year.

Afterwards, the kids all attended a session to learn more about jazz, so I wandered the Student Union, which is a pretty cool, if poorly designed, building. Its layout is just so weird! It was fun to see all the middle and high schoolers wandering around, so excited to be there.

We had a quick lunch in the Union basement and then went to the Purdue Jazz Band concert. It was pretty awesome. Okay, I'll admit I might have dozed off for a bit in the middle. But it was so warm in that concert hall, and the songs in the middle were so mellow and soothing. But I was totally awake for the more upbeat tunes!

It was fun to be with Spencer and watch him interact with his friends. These are all good kids. (Troublemakers aren't likely to put in the time and effort to be in Jazz Band, right?) I'm so glad Spencer gets to have experiences like this, and that I get to join him for some of them!

"Quick" Project

Lance took yesterday off because he has all of this PTO accrued and he has to use it or lose it over the next few weeks. We decided to go see a movie because 1) We could, 2) The kids wouldn't be there, and 3) Why not? (Movie fever has apparently struck our house. Or at least me. I'm on track to see more movies in the theater in the first 6 weeks of this year than all of last year!) ((That's not hard.))

So right before we left for the movie I discovered that the light in our little potty room in the master bathroom had burned out. And since the fans in our bathrooms are all over 13 years old and certainly showing their wear, I decided we should stop by Lowe's on the way home and get some new fans. Then we could quickly install them before the kids came home. So we stopped by Lowe's, picked up the fans, drove home, and got to work.

Now it must be noted here that we have been married for 16+ years. We've been homeowners for 10+ years. We've had quite a bit of experience in the home improvement projects department, so we really should have known better.

But we didn't.

What we thought would be a good 90 minute project lasted closer to SIX HOURS. I know. I know.

Here's what the old fans looked like. Actually, this was the best of them. The others were all dark and burnt in the middle. We're super classy around here...

See, we thought we'd be able to just easily pull out the old fans and install them from below. Nope. Can you tell we didn't research this project at all? Lance ended up spending a good 3 hours up in the attic. He'd work from above, me from below. The first one took quite a while because we didn't know what we were doing.

The second took a while because, although we knew what we were doing by then, the location in the attic made it much harder for Lance to move around. Plus, the kids came home. Plus, I had to leave for 10 minutes to go pick up Spencer from Jazz Band practice.

But it was the kids' bathroom fan that was the worst. We had bought a cheaper fan for in there because kids don't deserve to have as nice a things, right? (That was our logic. Plus, we bought the only 2 fans like the ones we put in the master bathroom.) ((Also, my logic is clearly flawed, because their light fixture is way nicer than any of the others in the house. But that's mainly because I fell in love with it, and if I could justify the expense we'd have the same ones in our bathroom. But I digress...)

We quickly realized that the hole in the kids' bathroom was too small. Which meant cutting drywall. We don't have a drywall saw, but we do have a Dremell with a drywall cutting attachment. Unfortunately, the person who knew where it was and how to use it was stuck in the attic. (It really was a pain to move around up there.) So I hunted for and found the tool (no small feat - I didn't know what I was looking for), figured out how to change the attachment (also tricky - it didn't make sense to me at first), and then measured and cut the drywall. It was messy. And also rather empowering!

But all of that was NOTHING compared to trying to get the @#$^#$%#!!! cover on the fan in that bathroom. The design was TERRIBLE. We were seriously considering just super gluing it up there. I'm not joking, that's how bad it was. But Lance finally got it to stay. If it ever falls, we'll just buy a new fan in a different brand, that's how bad it was.

But it was all worth it - don't they look great?

I didn't even know bathroom vent fans could look nice! Totally worth the money, if maybe not the time...

P.S. It wasn't totally horrible - we didn't have to go back to the hardware store even once. That's quite an accomplishment!

Messie Tessie

When Tess's room gets too messy, the mess starts spilling get out into the rest of the house. Guess it's time to force some bedroom cleaning this weekend.

(Not pictured: the mess behind me. And in the kitchen. And downstairs...)

Fun With Cars - or - I'm Just A Girl, Little 'Ol Me

So on Tuesday night our minivan wouldn't start after piano lessons. Spencer, Josh, and I all sat in sort of stunned silence as I turned the key and the lights in the car just flickered.

Josh started to slightly panic. Spencer said something... loudly... I'm not sure what. Because I was silently praying "Please don't let this be too expensive!"

I knocked on the Easton's door and asked if McKay could give us a jump start. I felt extra guilty because Sheri was trying to get her boys into bed and I was only adding unnecessary excitement. (On top of that, she was hosting Mom's Group that night, so she really needed them to go to bed!)

It was bitterly cold with huge wind gusts, but at least it wasn't torrentially raining like it had been an hour earlier! We got everything set up, but the battery wouldn't jump. By this point I freezing, annoyed, and increasingly worried about how much this mystery repair would eventually cost. That old saying about how once you pay off a car you start paying it off again through repairs kept going through my mind.

The Eastons were kind enough to let me borrow their van so I could drive Spencer and Josh home. I dropped the boys off, with instructions that they needed to get Tess and Cole into bed.

Side note - um, it's pretty dang awesome that I now have children who can be left without parental supervision. And not only can they be left alone, but they can be trusted to be put - and go - to bed! Having older kids is life changing, people!

Anyways, I dropped the boys off and then Lance followed me back to the Eastons in the Camry. It must be noted that all the way home and back again I kept trying to come up with plans for this dang car. It would need to be towed tomorrow. What time? How would I get to the Eastons so it could be towed? Who would pick me up from the car shop? Etc. Etc. I was kinda driving myself crazy. But that's what I always do in situations like these - plan for the worst. (Like, literally, plan. I had a schedule in my mind by the time we got back to the Eastons.)

Once there we did some Googling and decided that it probably was the battery, and not the starter as McKay suggested. Once again we had to bother the Eastons (sorry, guys!) (We owe you!) to borrow some tools to remove the old battery. We figured running it down to Auto Zone couldn't hurt. We got it out and then raced down to Auto Zone, getting there 20 minutes before they closed.

Turns out we were right - the battery was totally dead. Dead dead dead. Stupid battery. Why is there not some sort of indicator or light in my car that can tell me when my battery is getting ready to die?! My phone can tell me. And my FitBit. And even my thermostat! Catch up, car technology.

While we were there I decided I might as well pick up some wiper blades for the van, an errand I had been putting off for weeks. They guys there were so nice, looked up the info in the computer and grabbed them off the shelf for me. (After checking with me if the price was right.) ((I'm a mid-range kind of gal when it comes to wiper blades, in case you were wondering.))

We get back to the van, switch out the battery, and finally get home. Phew! What a chore. It was a annoying and a little expensive, but it could've been a whole lot worse and a whole lot more expensive! So all in all I felt pretty blessed. (Could you imagine what would've happened if I had been in the middle of nowhere, or far away from home? Yuck.)

The story should end here, but it doesn't.

This morning I finally get around to putting on the new wiper blades. Only this is what they looked like.

Um, I'm no expert. But I'm pretty sure that's not what they're supposed to look like. In fact, on the way home from Auto Zone that other night I had paused, thinking that I was pretty sure in the past I had bought 2 different sizes of wiper blades. But so much else was going on that I decided not to worry about it.

So dang. These blades were OBVIOUSLY the wrong size. Hanging off the car and tangling up with each other and whatnot. So I put the old ones back on, hurried to get ready (because of course I had tons of stuff to do today), and hurried over to Auto Zone to get replacements before I had to be at the school this morning.

It was raining on my way there. My old wipers were no bueno. All I wanted were new ones that were the right size so I could be on my merry way!

I walked in, politely explained that someone from the other night had told me these were the right size, but that they weren't. That, in fact, I really needed 2 different sizes. So the guy looked up the information again and proclaimed, "Nope, the 28's are the right size. It says right here."

I looked at him a bit incredulously. Um, no. Apparently there is something wrong with the information in there because they Do. Not. Fit.

He didn't believe me.

I showed him the picture above.

He was a bit abashed. But then started on some story about how they often change the sizes for various reasons, and that they (Chrysler) probably decided that the bigger sizes worked better now. His spiel lasted a couple of minutes and was quite condescending. His tone basically said "What do you know, you're just a woman. I, as a man, a man who works in an auto parts store, know infinitely more than you."

I looked at him like he was crazy. I was in No Mood for this. I mean, yeah, I don't know a ton about cars. But I can freaking tell when wiper blades don't fit.

I told him I would like to return the wiper blades.

The manager walked by - "Would you like to get some different blades? Sometimes the [more expensive brand] ones fit better."

And I noped right out of the there.

Jerks.

Fortunately for me, there's an O'Reilly Auto Parts store just across the street from Auto Zone. I'll be the first to admit that I thought it was dumb when they moved in there. Who needs two auto parts stores across the street from each other? I had never been in because I had always had good experiences with Auto Zone.

I walked in, explained the what Auto Zone had done, and asked them if they would like a new customer. I'm not usually so blunt or straight forward with people I don't know, but I was ticked.

It totally worked the way I wanted it to.

The guy who helped me was above and beyond helpful and friendly. And not condescending in the least. He looked up the blade size in the computer and scoffed when it said the blades needed to be 28". And then thanked me for bringing this to his attention! So he went out to my van - in the rain - and measured the blades. Then he found the right ones, took them out of the boxes and double checked to make sure they fit - and one of them didn't! And then he put them on for me! I told him I could totally do it - I had lots of experience from just this morning! But he was adamant. So I bought a back windshield wiper, too, because I needed one and because it felt like the right thing to do.

And I told him he had a new loyal customer, which his manager, who was nearby, overheard and appreciated.

So that's my story. I don't know if there's a moral or anything other than don't treat me like an idiot if you expect me to spend money in your store, stupid Auto Zone. And we plan to run our cars into the ground, which means lots of repairs and lots of trips to the auto parts store. Big mistake, Auto Zone, big mistake.

Growl.

Rogue One

I went to a movie all by myself today. I've never been to a movie by myself before, mainly because 1) I've always had someone to go with, or 2) there weren't any movies I really wanted to pay to see, or 3) I rationalized that I had too much other important stuff to do. But today 1) Lance is outta town and the kids are in school, 2) I want to see Rogue One because Star Wars is always better on three big screen, and 3) I don't want to do any of my important stuff.

A few thoughts I had while watching the movie:

  1. Not having anyone demand to sit on my lap during a movie is pretty awesome. (Yes, Tess still does this some time.)
  2. Not having to take anyone out to the bathroom in the middle of the best part was also kinda awesome.
  3. Not sharing my popcorn and drink? You guessed it. Awesome.
  4. Storm Troopers: Have they EVER been good at shooting people? Based on all the Star Wars movies I've seen, I'm pretty sure the answer is a big fat NOPE.
  5. CGI, no matter how advanced, is still kinda distracting. (As far as human faces go.)
  6. The last two Star Wars movies have had female lead characters. Of this I approve.
  7. What is it with the Empire and building really tall things, having walkways and ladders that are 100's of stories high, or just having pits, long drops, and frankly irrationally inaccessible areas?! Will they ever learn?! (Let's hope not. It makes for some fun scenes. Also, the Alliance seems to rely on these design quirks.)
  8. There has been a severe lack of Ewoks in these newer movies.
  9. Droids are the best. Especially Droids with personalities like Sheldon Cooper.
  10. Darth Vader? Still one of the best bad guys ever. Seeing him with that red light saber in the dark? Holy cow, I kid you not, it totally simultaneously delighted/frightened the bejeezus out of my inner eight year old self. He is The Best.
  11. The only thing better than seeing At-At Walkers on Hoth is seeing At-At Walkers on a beach. I didn't know I missed those things until I saw them again!
  12. The extreme rebels in this movie were very... ISIS-y. What with the cloaks and turbans and black hoods on people and all.
  13. The only thing cooler than a Jedi Knight is a ninja Jedi Knight. A blind ninja Jedi Knight. With a crossbow. A CROSSBOW.
  14. Forest Whitaker is always amazing. I am a huge fan. (And always slightly terrified when he's a bad guy.)
  15. There need to be intermissions in the middle of the movies for poor moms whose bladders have been destroyed by being pregnant with and giving birth to 4 babies. Or perhaps I need to stop slurping large sodas at the movies. No, the first one.
  16. Where was the Star Wars fanfare at the beginning of the movie?!?!  WHERE WAS IT?!? I feel a little jipped that I didn't get to hear it in surround sound.
All in all, a great movie, and a great way to spend an afternoon to myself!

Addendum: I just realized that I have never had a make-out session in a theater, either. Perhaps I'll have to invite Lance to come with me next time I treat myself to a movie! ;)
