Cole is my first sling baby.
I decided this was the best way to 'protect' him during Primary on Sundays. Because a sleeping baby in a car carrier in a room full of children aged 3-11? That's just asking for trouble. Keeping him on me at all times seemed the safer option. (And I was right - many of the kiddos wanted to touch Cole yesterday. Looking = okay. Touching = not so much. Primary is just one big germ fest, even in the summer.)
The sling is also great for around the house, because it allows me to get stuff done while still holding the baby. And Cole is turning into an "I must be held all the time, Mother Dear" kind of baby. So this is a happy solution for the both of us. (Especially because I'm getting good at getting him out of the sling and into his crib without waking him up. Oh the mad mothering skills you develop with the third baby!)
Anywho, I really like his sling, and so does Cole! He falls asleep within five minutes once he's settled in there. Of course, first he has to spit up a bit, but I figure that's just because we have to squish him a little. No worries; we're not afraid of a little (or a lot) of spit up around here.
(Side note: Spencer was a little freaked out the first time he saw Cole spit up. "Mommy! Cole just threw up! Ewww! He must be sick! Poor Cole!" It took me a while to convince him Cole was okay. Now he's a champ at wiping Cole's face when it's needed. And by wiping his face I mean attacking him with the burp cloth as if he were waxing a car. Good helper, Spence.)
It's taken me a little while to get proficient at putting him in, but we're getting there. My back is also getting used to carrying him around this way. (Boy, my pregnancies have wreaked havoc on my back!)
Several people asked me if I made my sling. No way. I thought about it, but was too nervous about carrying my baby around in something that I made. (I'm not confident in my sewing skills.) But the more I look at it the more I think I probably could have done it. Oh well. (Christy or Gigi - you should totally start making these. You have the skills and great taste in fabric!) I bought mine here, in case you're interested.

Cool sling! I made 2 to use for Meghan (one for Joe - manly, and one for me). Too bad she didn't like to be in it. They are really easy to make and there are tons of cool fabric out there out... I think I'll make a baby one for Meghan for her birthday - that would be super cute!

They are pretty easy to make. You could have done it, Maren! But, having someone else make it for you is probably a smarter idea when you're pregnant or have a little baby.
Maybe Gigi can make some to go with her awesome rag quilts?
Yep, I'm I huge sling fan. I have three. A Mai Tai (my friend got the pattern off the internet), a Hug-A-Bub (from Australia, way over priced), and a little sling I bought off ebay in '02 for $15. I rotate them to give my shoulders and back a break. Ruby is rarely un-slinged.
I loved "wearing" Madeline, but found that the sling hurt my back when I wore her in it for any extended period of time. Solution? The Moby Wrap. It is fabulously wonderful. It goes over both shoulders and around your back. You can wear them facing forward or backward, and theoretically nurse them in it. We still use it from time to time.
