Feasting Upon The Word

Newly mobile babies are dangerous. Mainly because you forget just how much trouble they can get into in a short amount of time. I quickly remembered this today as Josh became much more mobile! (And still no pictures or video - he just stops, sits, and looks at the camera. Stinker.)

Anywho, Josh got into all sorts of stuff today. His favorites included the media cabinet, taking the door stops off of the walls, toilet paper, and magazines. I was out of the room literally for one minute, with Josh on the opposite side of the room from the magazine rack, and came back to this:

Okay, it doesn't look that bad. But that's because I smoothed out a lot of the damage before I thought about using this as blog fodder. Plus, he ate a large chunk of one of President Monson's talks, but I didn't discover that until after I put the camera away. I suspect I will be finding parts of the talk in diapers for the next few days. Mmmmm... conference edition...

Lifetime Goal: Accomplished!

I actually have a list of lifetime goals on my Palm. Some of them are pretty big: go back to Jerusalem, spend a month in Europe, host a gourmet dinner party, publish a cook book, etc. Some of them aren't as grandiose: finish my quilt (I've been working on it bit by bit for 3 years!), sing Kereoke, learn to make great pastries, etc.

I finished one of my smaller goals today: buy a chocolate at a chocolate shop. I know this is crazy - who's never bought a chocolate before? That would be me. I've always been too cheap/frugal to buy a single chocolate. It's doubly crazy because I went to BYU and they have a great assortment of handmade chocolates in the bookstore, notorious for being the downfall of many a co-ed. When I lived in Salt Lake the route Spencer and I would take for our daily walks went right by a chocolate shop - but again, I never even went in.

So for some still unknown reason I decided that today would be the day I would accomplish my goal! The boys and I went to the Farmer's Market and then went strait to McCord's Candies. With Spencer's help we picked out four chocolates and a chocolate covered marshmallow, spending a whopping $2.80. Hey big spender! It was 9:30am, so I wasn't really in the mood for a lot of sweets, but naturally Spencer was. So of course I had to taste a chocolate, too! They tasted like sweet, sweet, pricey success. :)

Okay, I have another silly confession/goal. I have never picked up the phone, ordered a pizza, and had it delivered to where I live. Yeah, I know - it's completely un-American. I am totally letting the terrorists win. Cheapskate card again - it's expensive! Plus, we make pizzas around here all the time - it's faster to make one than to wait for an order! Growing up we NEVER ordered pizza, and when I went to college I never got in the habit. (Starving student!) Oh sure, I've been out for pizza lots of times. And we love Papa Murphy's Take 'n Bake. But it's not quite the same, is it?

So here are my questions for you:

1. What are your goals, big or small?
2. If I ordered a pizza, who should I order it from?

Kitchen Help

Joshie got so dirty during lunch today that I decided the easiest thing would be to strip him down and stick him in the sink. Spencer heard us and decided he needed to come in and "help". The two of them are so cute together!

They got water everywhere, and for a second I just about stopped them. But then I figured it was just water - it could only clean the kitchen at this point! (And with family coming into town on Thursday, I need lots of help cleaning!)

In other news Josh has finally started to crawl. Hooray! He won't go very far unless he has the right motivation (i.e. food), but it's only a matter of time before he's all over the house. It's funny to see him trying to move all of that baby fat everywhere! Too bad he wouldn't do it for the camera - but I'll keep it out and make sure to get some pics of him in the next few days.

My Life

I cannot wait for preschool to start...

Current song in my head: hmm... none. I actually have no song in my head. Odd. Perhaps I'm coming down with something...

Late Night Book Group

A short post tonight because our book group ran late. This month's book was The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I thought it was really good, and yes, we did discuss it a bit! (Among other things...)

I've been wanting to make these Boston Cream Pie Minis for a while, and book group was the perfect excuse. They were actually really easy to make and super yummy.

Spencer and Josh did their part in helping get rid of the excess cream filling. :) Yum!
Spencer said something really funny when we finished the cupcakes. I didn't realize he was capable of such logic already!

Spencer: Daddy would like these.
Me: Yep, Daddy would really like these cupcakes.
Spencer: We will give him some?
Me: Yep.
Spencer: He can have some, but he can't have lots. Oh no! He would eat them all and ruin your party!
Me: He won't eat them all.
Spencer: No, he can't eat them all. Just a few.

It cracks me up that he knew that if Lance ate all of my cupcakes it would ruin my party. Spencer is one smart cookie!

The Sweet Summer Sounds of Neil Diamond

Tonight we finally got out to Tropicanoe Cove. We've been meaning to go all summer, but this is the first Family Night (when prices are much cheaper!) where the weather's been hot enough to make it worth it. Too bad it's also the last family night of the season. School starts way early here!

A few highlights:

1. More like a lowlight - Spencer proved that he has no fear of water and even less common sense. We had just gotten out of the lazy river. Lance turned around for 3 seconds to grab Josh from my lap, and Spencer was gone. We both looked for him and called for him for a good 2 minutes. And then I saw him - being rescued by the life guard! The stinker had run up the stairs to the toucan chute slides, cut in line, and gone down the slide before anyone knew what was happening. The landing pool is 6 feet deep and the child hasn't gone to swimming lessons yet. So I stood at the side of the pool while everyone around us watched Spencer be rescued. As soon as he was out I grabbed and hugged him, and then immediately started lecturing and being upset! (Perfectly normal under the circumstances!) We had to fill out an incident report. I felt like the WORST MOM EVER. Spencer was a bit water-logged, but didn't seem to understand what the big deal was.

2. While waiting in line to go down the big water slide, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond started playing. I was listening to the babble of the two 13 year old girls in front of me. One of them said, "Man, the music here sucks!" and then continued on about some boy she liked. I just smiled and laughed to myself and wondered what Christy would have said to them.

3. Josh splashing and playing in the water. He LOVED it! He even put his face in the water and blew bubbles. Not bad for a baby!

4. Floating down the lazy river, just enjoying the cool water and the heat of the evening.

Muy Caliente!

It's finally mosty toasty around here. Not 'finally' because I wanted it to be hot - just because it's been a cooler summer than normal up until this week. Anywho, high 90's with something like 95% humidity. Gotta love Midwest Summers. Oh wait, no you don't.

So I thought I would be smart and take the kids on a walk across the bridge today. We'd go early in the morning, after hitting the farmer's market, so that it wouldn't be as hot. Not smart. So hot. I was only walking around and the sweat just kept beading down my back. Gross. But at least it wore the boys out and they got to be outside for a bit. Spencer loves bridges and didn't seem to even notice the heat. Josh sat in his stroller like a banana slug. (I say that only to describe how he lounged; I certainly don't think Josh is slug-like!)

By the way, Josh is not picking his nose and Spencer is not peeing off of the bridge. They just look that way; bad timing. (Or good timing, depending on your sense of humor.)

On the way home Spencer thought it would be a good idea to pour half of his big water bottle, which was full of ice water, all over Josh. Josh disagreed rather loudly (and wetly) all the way home. The poor baby was soaked and Spencer just couldn't understand why I wouldn't give him his water back.

Yeah, it's been that kind of day.
