Spencer's New Tactic

Sleeping in is pretty much unheard of around here, due to one member of our family who shall remain nameless. (His name starts with a J, ends with an A, and in the middle has an Oshu.) If, on some rare occasion, you do get to sleep in, it's usually until the magical hour of 8am. Sweet bliss.

Since it's now darker in the mornings, our little alarm clock has been snoozing later than normal. Lance and I would be enjoying later mornings on the weekend if not for one thing: Spencer now feels the need to be our family rooster. (For the love, if it's not one kid it's the other, right?) And of course if Spencer's up there is no way in this world he's going to let mom and dad keep sleeping. That's just against the laws of kid nature.

Picture this:

My room at 7am. It's still pretty dark outside. I'm snuggled underneath a couple of quilts because I left the windows open and it got a little chilly during the night. (Side note: isn't that the best? When it's nice and cool in your room but you're snuggly warm in your bed?)

Me: Dreaming, not saying anything. Unless you ask my husband, but are you really going to trust a guy who wears black socks with his shorts just to drive me nuts? I thought not.

Spencer sneaks into the room. He tiptoes around the bed to my side, because he would never dream of waking daddy up! He stops by my side and places his face about five inches away from mine.

Spencer (whispering): Mommy?

Me: no answer

Spencer (a little louder, but still softly): Mommy?

Me: still sleeping

Spencer (quite loudly): MOMMY!

Me: Aurgghh! Bah! Wha...?

Once I realize what's going on and who is bothering me, I roll over, away from Spencer. My vain hope is that he'll either give up on me and go back to bed, or at the very least start harassing his father instead.

Spencer: Mommy, it's a sunny sunny day! (Which is a lie, since it's still dark out.) It's time to get up. Mommy!..... Mommy?

I hear his little footsteps leave the room.

Me (thinking): I can't believe my incredible luck! He is actually going back to bed! I rock! I...

The sound of Josh's bedroom door creaking open.

Me (thinking): No no no no no...!!!

Josh: WAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Spencer (as sweetly and brightly as possible): Oh, hi Josh! Are you awake?

Me (thinking): Well played, Spencer, well played.

Josh (with righteous indignation because Spencer has now stolen his blanket): WAA! WAA! WAAAAAAAAA!

Kids are such pests when they wake up their other siblings. I can understand your frustration there. Fortunately, when my kids come in the always go to John instead of me because he's more patient and kind with them in the morning than I am. Tee Hee!

You should lock your door. But then he might resort to pounding on it to wake you up. MMM, so that might not work either.
