Roadtrip 2015 - Hogle Zoo

When I was a kid most of our vacations were to UT to visit my grandparents - just like my kids today! One place I particularly remember visiting is Hogle Zoo. It's not the biggest or the best zoo ever, but I remember really liking it.

So we decided a trip to the zoo would be a fun way to spend the day, and drove up on the morning of the 30th.

Cole was on the rampage again. Yelling and screaming - LOUD - whenever Josh got a little ahead of us. And of course that is exactly what Josh did, because he knew it drove Cole nuts. *sigh* Cole was in a foul mood pretty much the entire day, except when he got to see animals poop (especially the giraffe - very impressive!) or when running through the splash pad. Oy.

The zoo had a bunch of animatronic dinosaurs around the place for "Zoorrasic Park". A little odd for a zoo, but whatever.

Josh is all about the head cut-out poses.

I thought the zoo was pretty cool. The kids seemed non-plussed most of the time. Punks.

They all really enjoyed getting sprayed by water by this dino.

Grandpa and a gorilla. Grandpa is the one on the left. *rimshot*

This, my friends, is the exact spot where Kyle threw up over 25 years ago when our aunt Lisa took us to the zoo. I vividly remember the event. We had only been at the zoo for a little bit. We went to look at the gorillas and we watched one eat a whole banana, peel and all. And that's when Kyle puked everywhere. Ah, memories. (Poor Aunt Lisa! It's a wonder she still had kids!)

This large elephant sprayed people every once in a while.

One of the few times he wasn't yelling and whining.

I took these pictures while Cole was in time out. I can't remember exactly what he had done, but it was especially naughty.

We had brought a picnic lunch and decided to leave the zoo and go to a local park to eat. (Easier, cooler, less crowded.) We found this one up on the bench overlooking Salt Lake City. It had a pretty great view! While sitting down, Spencer dropped his bottle of rootbeer on the ground. Then he picked it up and opened it. It sprayed EVERYWHERE. And instead of throwing it away from him (and the rest of us) he just kept holding it! He was pretty upset, and it was hard for us not to laugh. (Not now, though. It was pretty funny. C'mon, Spencer of the future - it was FUNNY.)

After lunch we ventured to the splash pad at the zoo. It wasn't really that great, but the kids sure seemed to love it. It was at this point that I thought we probably should've just gone to a pool that day instead, since they didn't really seem to care about seeing animals and only wanted to play in the water. Lesson learned. (In fact, the next day we spent the afternoon at the Provo Rec Center and it was awesome.)

Josh and Cole would climb up onto those barrels and then get sprayed right on the face and back.

We eventually made our way down to the sea lions, where the kids had fun racing them.

We also checked out the polar bears. My Colarbear with a real polar bear! (Note: the polar bear was much better behaved...)

On the way out we had to get a shot at this drinking fountain. I totally remember that being there when I was a kid!

All in all, it wasn't a terrible day at the zoo, but it certainly wasn't the funnest, either. It was hot and the kids were whiny, and Cole was pretty rotten. I felt kinda guilty that Dad and Susie had to endure all of that. Fortunately, they are far too nice to hold it against me!
