Scrapbooks - High School - Freshman Year

I went to Fairfield High school in Fairfield, CA.

Glasses, braces, awkward grin... total freshman.

I joined Leadership (student government), which met before school at 7am, which meant I had seminary at 6am. I had good teachers and made good friends.

I actually met Lance our freshman year, but don't seem to have any pictures of him.

Big fieldtrip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium - hand in hand with Vance Sohn. Oy.

Scrapbooks - 8th Grade

With all the nostalgia goin' on around here lately I decided I should probably scan my high school and college scrapbooks. I didn't exactly adhere to the rules of acid-free-whatevers when making them and their age is starting to show.

I thought about just making a separate book for these pages, but that would require extra work on my part. No thanks. So I'm going to slowly but surely add them to the blog and just include them in my annual blog book. As you will be able to see, I didn't exactly have what you would call... talent... when it came to scrapbooking. At least at first - I got better! Also, the dang scanner we have doesn't scan an entire 8.5x11" page. What the what?! It cuts .10" from each side. I mean, seriously, why in the world, scanner?! But whatever. I could wait until we get a better scanner... but then it probably won't get done.

I may or may not include explanations for each page. I may or may not answer any questions you may have. I guess we'll just see how it goes.

My mom was in Young Women's with me pretty much the entire time I was in there, for several years as the president. Apparently I couldn't be trusted. ;)

Fun fact: I was student body president in 8th grade.

Going to Blue Lagoon on the 8th grade trip was a big deal - something you looked forward to your entire middle school career.

Benevolent Al Roker

We had a 2 hour delay this morning. This is an actual conversation Cole and I had.

Cole: Why does the news let the snow stay in the ground this morning?

Me: Um... what?

Cole (frustrated with such a dim mother): Why is there snow? Why did the news let it snow?

Me: Cole, the news doesn't make it snow. It doesn't decide the weather. It just tells us what the weather is going to be.

Cole: *blank stare, crickets chirping*

Me: The news does weather forecasts.

Cole: Yes, it chooses the weather.

Me: No, it GUESSES the weather. The earth chooses the weather.

Cole: *silent, mulling over this earth-shattering revelation* Can I have more oatmeal, please?

I can only imagine what was going on in this kid's mind. Did he truly believe that the weather men chose what weather we had? That a benevolent Al Roker sent fun snow in the winter and mild temps in the spring? That a vindictive Chuck Lofton sent tornadoes and hail?

Man, I love kids.

20 Years

I've been thinking about the past a bit lately, for several reasons:

1) Lance gave me a printed book of all the emails I sent him when we were dating and engaged. For some inexplicable reason I cannot find his emails to me, although I know for sure that at one point I had downloaded them to a Word doc. Oh well. So I've been reading them and cringing at my 22 year old self. I don't think it would be as bad if we had Lance's emails, but just mine? Oy.

2) This year marks my 20th high school reunion. (FHS class of '96, baby!) I'm not going to the reunion because it's being held on a yacht around the SF bay and would cost $300 just for the tickets for Lance and me. I'm not big on booze cruises (which is you know what it will be), not many of my close friends from school are going, and we did the same thing (sans the booze) ((for my group, anyway)) for our senior prom. Been there, done that. But the big 2-0 is picking up a lot of steam on FB and such. Lots of people coming out of the woodwork.

3) This dang commercial. It has nothing to do with Uncle Ben's rice and everything to do with the song they're covering: "I Saw the Sign" by Ace of Base. A song that was distinctly part of my high school career. The first time I saw the ad I thought "Ack! That's a high school song! What's it doing on a rice commercial?!" Then I thought "I sound like my father..." And then I thought "I am officially tipping into middle age." I guess it happens to the best of us.

4) Lance won this cool GOGroove speaker while at CES.

(He's always winning stuff. I never win stuff. We're a good balance.) Last the night the kiddos and I were playing with it, dancing and singing and using my phone as a microphone and turning up the speaker really loud. (They're favorite thing, although they failed to get my Wizard of Oz references. I have failed as a mother.) I didn't have any music on my phone so I signed into my Amazon Prime Music account and found a ton of great playlists. My favorite by far was/is "50 Great 90's Alternative Songs".

I told my kids it was time for a crash course in great '90s music. "This was what I listened to in high school and college and it is AWESOME. You're gonna love it."

I played "Smells Like Teen Spirit", easily the anthem of grunge and all things 90's. Probably one of the biggest (if not biggest) song of the decade.

They looked at me with blank, vacant eyes.

I played "The Distance" by Cake. Not a response. (Well, Cole requested we eat some cake.) "Today" by the Smashing Pumpkins. They laughed at the band name. I started "Basket Case" by Green Day and then quickly decided it was probably not the best thing for them to listen to.

I rocked out to other songs and my kids rolled their eyes at me, their ancient, so-out-of-it mother. And then they demanded to play with the microphone app again. I complied because obviously good music is just wasted on this generation. (Ack! I AM ancient!!!!)

But I've been listening to this and other 90's playlists today and loving it. I keep thinking of all the fun I had in high school and college. I know high school isn't the easiest time for everyone, but for the most part I had a great time. I had good teachers and great friends, and even better roommates in college! Oh college. So much fun. (I studied and learned a lot, too, but that seems not quite as important at this point in my life. And perhaps it isn't anymore.)

My life is great now, too. Better than great! I love being a wife and mother and all the other roles I play in life. But sometimes it's fun to think about a time when I was totally focused on myself and my biggest worries revolved around term papers and certain boys being interested in me.

Good Habit

Remember how several years ago I found a killer deal on Ziploc snack bags at Sam's Club and came home with 1000+ (literally) of them?

I found 70 page spiral notebooks at Wal-Mart on Thursday for $.10 each. Now I'm kinda kicking myself for not buying more.

Lance just rolled his eyes when he saw them, but I don't care. Some deals are just too good to pass. (And some habits are just too good to break!) ((Can a habit be good? In the case of saving major money on very useful items, I say yes.))

Temple

Lance took the day off, so we left Tess with some friends and went to the temple.

I love our temple.

So very much.

I also love Lance very much, but I see him every day. And he's a guy, not a building. I get that.

But back on point. I love our temple. (I love all temples. I love that we have temples and I love the blessings we get from attending the temple. But I really love our Temple because we waited so very long for it. I guess what I really should say is that I really appreciate our temple.) ((No. I love our temple.))

I randomly ran into a dear old friend while there. (Ginger Crook!!!) This is not the first time something like this has happened at the temple, and I doubt it will be the last.

And whenever it does happen I can't help but think "This must be a little what heaven is like."

Our church emphasizes eternal families; that's the goal - spending eternity with our families. But in my view, friends are very much like family. They're the family you choose, and it just won't be heaven without them. I'm pretty sure heaven will be full of reunions between good friends.

My point in this post? I'm not quite sure, other than I love going to the temple. Especially our Temple in Indy.
