Bunko!

Tonight I hosted Bunko. I love Bunko nights. It's so fun to get together with a bunch of fun girlfriends. I love the gabbing and the laughing and the playing. I lurve the trash talk. Like Michelle said, you can say just about anything at Bunko when it comes to trash talk, which is very liberating. (You don't get the same rush when trash talking to a four year old while playing Candy Land. Trust me, I know.) ((BTW, Liz Weber is still the reigning queen of trash talking at Bunko. My hat off to you, ma'am!))

Anywho, I also love Bunko food. Everyone always makes such yummy treats! (Not that I'm bragging or anything. I mean, I think I made some yummy treats. But I know that everyone else always has really yummy food!)

My menu for the night included:

- Blinkers (eggnog mixed with Pomegranate 7-Up) ((Don't knock it unless you've tried it!)) (((And you wouldn't knock it if you've tried it - it's super yummy!)))
- Homemade Beef Tamales (I decided to try a Cooking Light recipe, since I didn't want anyone's arteries clogging up while rolling the dice. With my luck they'd have a heart attack right when I rolled the mystical Travel Bunko and then no one would believe me later when I said I rolled it.) ((BTW, I did roll a Travel Bunko tonight!)) (((No, really.)))
- Homemade Red Chili Sauce for the tamales (Which I forgot to take a picture of. Dang.)
- Homemade Chocolate Dipped Oreos (Waaaayy better than store bought!)
- Raz-Ma-Taz bars (With cherry jam instead of raspberry.) ((I didn't get the recipe from this site, but I'm too lazy to get up, open the cookbook, and type the recipe.))
- Traditional veggie tray and dip (I think it's a rule that you have to have a veggie tray at Bunko... :)

It was a good night. I won the Travel prize. (Dang. I forgot to take a picture of the prizes!)

Anyways, long story short, I love Bunko. (And it loves me!)

(Did you notice how many parenthesis I used in this post?) ((Was it too many?))

(((Hmmm... maybe I should lay off the Blinkers for a while...)

UnMerry Christmas

I had a really weird nightmare the other night: I ruined Christmas.

How?

I forgot to wrap the presents.

It went a little something like this:

Spencer ran into our room saying "Merry Christmas!" Then he ran out and we followed him. We got out to the living room and stopped dead in our tracks.

Spencer was staring at the tree with the most bewildered and sad look on his face.

Why?

There were no presents under the tree.
"Santa didn't come," he said in the most pathetic little boy voice ever.

But it wasn't Santa's fault. It was mine.

I had forgotten to wrap the gifts and put them under the tree.

What?!?

My mind raced and I tried to remember and understand how I could have forgotten something so important! I couldn't think straight. Didn't I remember it was Christmas?

Spencer was rooting under the tree, as if he could find some little gifts somewhere. Josh was sitting in the middle of the floor babbling and chewing on some mysterious object. (As he usually is, in real life.)

I told Lance to distract them in their rooms for a few minutes and ran to go wrap some gifts.

I literally woke up in a cold sweat. Isn't that weird? It's not like I'm stressed about Christmas - I even finished all of my shopping last week. Why would I have a dream like that? Oh well, no worries. It was just a dream.

Now excuse me. I have some wrapping to do.

Snow Day

We woke up to over 12 inches of fresh snow this morning. Halfway through clearing out the driveway we learned that church as canceled again. Snow day! (BTW, we have decided to bite the bullet and buy a snow blower. Our neighbor let us use his and it was great! Of course this means it won't snow for the rest of the season. But that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the greater good.)

We lazed around and watched TV. We read and played. I made yummy cinnamon/orange/chocolate chip rolls because I promised Lance I would only if church were canceled again. We even all took naps - at the same time! (A snow miracle!)

Spencer and I went outside to test his new birthday snow boots, snow pants, and sled. He loved it. He used to only be able to handle the snow for about 10 minutes, but at 30 minutes he was only getting started! Have I created a snow monster? Whatever I've created, it's made for some cute snow pictures!

Go Tigers

Congratulations, Graham & Ashley! We're proud of you!

(But we're also going to miss you a lot!)

Lighting Lust

I am in love with this garland shade light. I discovered it in my January issue of Real Simple. I think it would be so pretty in my kitchen, above the table. It would give the house something distinct; different from the cookie cutter fixtures you find in subdivision homes. And at $80, it's pretty reasonably priced.

If only I could have put this on my Christmas wish list sooner...

And They Called It Monkey Love...

Okay, before I start this post, let me just say that I'm not one of those moms who spends $1000 on birthday parties. Never will be. (This one only cost just over $50, actually!) What I am is a mom who, in her pre-child days, wanted to be an event planner. I love to plan parties, dinners, get togethers, vacations, whatever. You have a function? I'd love to plan it! (No really - I'd love to help!) Lists, schedules, decorations, budgets - I'm getting giddy. I got to do a little professional event planning in my pre-kiddo days, but not enough to get it out of my system.

So that's why birthdays are so fun for me. There's so much potential, so much fun to be had - so much planning! (Ooh, my heart just skipped a beat!) And once you get used to planning events, they get really simple to plan and put together.

That said, here's a look at Spencer's fourth birthday party from a planner/mom perspective.

Theme:

Every good party needs a theme. Themes are great because they can kick-start all the great ideas you have in your brain for the party; one idea just leads to another. The possibilities are endless. However, themes are also good because they set boundaries; parties with too many unrelated elements feel a little off-balance, which is distracting. (At least to me!)

For several months Spencer has been talking about having a monkey birthday party. (Don't ask me where that came from; I just work here.) So I took the monkey theme and ran with it!

Decorations:

Decorations, especially for a kids party, don't have to be expensive to look good.

The only things I bought to decorate were the crepe paper and the inflatable monkey - both really cheap. Everything else was made from what I had around the house. Crepe paper is great because it's cheap and can make a big impact if used properly.

Kudos to Lance for making the excellent trunk; it really pulled the whole look together.

Food:

Every birthday party needs a cake. Spencer kept requesting a monkey cake, which scared the bejeebies out of me because I've never claimed to be a good cake maker. Oh, I can make the cake taste good - just not look good. (Remember Josh's birthday trifle?) But this time I tried really hard, and I think I made up for all the poor, mangled cakes of my past.

I owe it all the Martha and her recipe. I think it was a monkey-head-masterpiece! (BTW - I didn't want to buy a bag of yucky black licorice for the face. So I bought some Tootsie Rolls, heated them in the microwave, and molded them into the eyes, nose, and mouth. C'mon, clever, right? Well, it made me feel clever.)

The cake itself was decent; it tasted a lot like banana bread with chocolate frosting. But I wasn't going for taste this time - just looks. I can honestly say this was the best monkey head cake I have ever made. :)

We had pepperoni pizza and monkey fruit salad, because I am sure that's what a monkey would eat for lunch if given the chance.

Activities:

With little kids you have to have at least a few structured activities; otherwise it's just mad chaos for a few hours. (This way it's structured mad chaos for a few hours!)

First we made a cute monkey craft. Nothin's more fun than gluing a monkey together! (I glued the bigger pieces together beforehand, just to make things easier.)

Then we had a few games to get the wiggles out. First, pin the tail on the monkey. (Has my artwork gotten any better since Thanksgiving?) ((Okay, I can't lie. I typed "how to draw a monkey" into Google and got this.))

I don't know if the kids really got the point of the game (there was some peaking and some helping!), but they still had a fun time!

Then we played "monkey dance". The kids would dance when the music was on and then freeze when it was turned off. It was pretty funny, but only lasted one song. (I thought they would go longer; I thought wrong.)

All that dancing made everyone hungry, so it was time for cake and ice cream. Spencer cracked me up - we got to the very first line of "Happy birthday to you..." and he blew out the candles. So this video shows me lighting the candles for 2nd time - and telling Spencer when it was okay to blow them out! (I think he was worried about his friends beating him to it!)

I thought it would be hard to cut into my magical monkey head. But then Spencer started sticking his fingers into it and licking the frosting, and suddenly it didn't seem so hard. (Cutting a perfect monkey cake head? Hard. Cutting an imperfect monkey cake head? Easy-ish.)

Party Favors:

Party favors are great ways to end the party. They help tie in the theme one more time, give the guest something to remember the party, and can be a big help to moms trying to leave. ("Get your coat and shoes on and you can have your party favor!") Plus, it was good to have Spencer give his guests something after receiving so many wonderful gifts.

Our party favors included banana candy and a keychain-sized Barrel Of Monkeys game. It also included a thank you note for coming to our party.

So that was the party. I think a good time was had by all. Lots of laughing and eating and playing. Even some crying. (Each child had a chance to cry at least once, and if that's not a sign of a good party I don't know what is!)

Now you'll have to excuse me. Lance's 30th birthday is in six months and I have some planning to do. :)

Hunkerin' Down

There's a huge snow storm headin' our way - the worst of which we'll see on Sunday morning. (Bet they won't cancel church this week, though!)

I think we're pretty well set. We have extra water, plenty of food, a month's worth of diapers and wipes. I might need to get some more milk tomorrow, but I'm not too worried about much else.

And talk about perfect timing: we're giving Spencer snow pants, snow boots, and a sled for his birthday tomorrow.

What do you do to get ready for a big snow storm?

(No, I really want to know. What if I've forgotten something crucial? Boy, wouldn't you feel guilty if you found out that what I really needed was X, but you didn't bother to tell me?)
