Cole has lately been in love with his shoes. It's one of the few words he's willing to say, and he pronounces it "shooce". It's dang cute.
He'll walk around with his shoes and play with them and whine until someone puts them on his feet. When he's in his foot jammies he gets quite upset that we won't put his shoes on him. The boy loves his shoes.
The other day I noticed that his shoes were pretty tight; time to upgrade. I had been dreading this a little because I knew it might be a little tragic for the little guy. I decided that having him help me find his new shoes would help him a little. We went through several Rubbermaid bins of clothes until we finally found the one with some extra shoes. (Luckily, my boys tend to go easy on shoes until they're about two so I didn't have to go to the store!)
We found some tennis shoes that were just his size. Score! He was pretty excited about the new shooce. We even found some church shoes that fit him. Double score! (He wasn't as excited about those, though.)
So he happily ran around and tested out his new kickers. He was one pleased toddler.
Then he found his old shoes.
He picked them up and demanded in his wordless way to have them put on. I tried to explain that they were too small now because he was such a big boy, and that he didn't need them anymore because he had his new shoes. But can you really rationalize with a toddler? (Answer: no.)
So rather than have him follow me around all day whining about his shoes I put them up in the boys' over-the-door shoe pocket. High enough that he couldn't reach them.
He wasn't upset, just curious. He pointed a few times, but I told him No, no more of those shooce. New shooce!
He seemed to get it and happily toddled off to find some mischief to get himself into. But throughout the day I noticed him going back into Spencer and Josh's room and partially closing the door. I finally followed him once and found him looking at and talking to his old shoes. He was visiting them, babbling as if to tell them it was alright, things were going to be okay.
I just love my darling Cole!
(I'm kicking myself for not getting pictures of this today, but oh well. Sometimes you have to live your life in front of the lens instead of always behind it.)
