Every once in a while I do right by my man and make him a meal like this. And by 'like this' I mean: meat, cheese, and not a green veggie in sight. Oh, and definitely NOT low-fat.
It's a real man's meal.
I got the original recipe from this cookbook. (It's not that great of a cook book - no pictures.) But I've tweaked it and changed it and made it my own. In other words: I made it a lot easier to make. Because I'm all about making dinner easy, especially when it comes to something this sinfully delicious. (If it's healthy I'm willing to put a little more effort into it!)
So, a la Pioneer Woman, here's my recipe for Sausage Apple Pie.

So, a la Pioneer Woman, here's my recipe for Sausage Apple Pie.
I start by making my own apple pie filling. Oh c'mon, it's not that hard to do. You cut and peel around 3 pounds of apples using this. Melt some butter in a big pan, saute the apples until they're a little soft, but still crunchy. Add 1/2 cup of sugar, a couple of shakes of cinnamon, and a couple dashes of salt. Saute until done and cool on a cookie sheet.
Then get out two boxes of pie crust mix. Make the crust with one of the boxes. (Hold on to the other box; we'll come back to it later.)
Pat the crust into the bottom of a deep pie or casserole dish. You can make it nice and pretty and smooth. Or you can do it like I did. Prick the bottom with a fork. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes.
Next, cook up one pound of sausage. I like the sage kind myself, but I bet something spicy would be yummy, too. Be sure to drain it - excessively greasy pie = gross pie.
Put the cooled apples on top of the crust. Mmmm...
Put all that healthy sausage on top of the sugar-laden apples.
Next, and this is gonna blow your mind, put on a bunch of slices of American Cheese. (Is that an angelic choir I hear?) I don't even really like American Cheese, but on here it works. Plus, it's Lance's favorite.
Now take that second box of pie crust mix and combine it with 3/4 cups of brown sugar. Sprinkle that star dust all over the top of the pie. Don't be stingy. (Although I do find that I only use about 3/4's of it.) Bake the whole thing at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
Take it out of the oven and serve warm.
Be sure to blow on it before you dig in - it's hot!
Just look at that... a heart attack waiting to happen. But don't worry, you'd die happy.
See, Lance loves it. (Or maybe he's having a heart attack...)
Even Spencer, who claims to hate anything served at dinner, dug right in.
What a magical meal - it even promotes family love and togetherness.
Thank you, Sausage Apple Pie. See you in six months! (Once we've worked off all the calories we consumed this evening...)

Maren, this is just amazing! I felt like I "over blogged" last week and I'm going through burn out. But here you are, spinning out great blogs, some times multi-daily, to the delight of your readers. Wow.
I am so very impressed with your blog a la Pioneer Woman! I especially love the happy family picture of Lance and Spencer...that was classic.
It's really fun to read your blogs...you probably didn't even know I was reading your blogs...pretty sneaky. I peeked off of Sybrina's blogsite. Man if I could replace the apples Bryan might eat that. He loves sausage, that has to be an ingredient in our meatloaf everytime.
Mindi - blogging is therapeutic to me. Can you keep a secret? I don't really do it for my readers - I do it for my sanity. :)
Amy - I'm so glad you've been lurking on my site. Now I'll have to start on yours. (What a cute family you have!)
Perhaps you could replace the apples with pears? (Although I've never heard of a pear pie... might be a bit mushie.)
Looks scrumptious - I'll have to try it...
