Busy Bee, Busy Bee

So you might have noticed that I haven't been blogging very consistently lately.  I have several excuses:

1.  Lance was out of town all last week at a conference in Vegas.  We survived, despite Spencer's apparent goal of driving me NUTS by forgetting his homework.  Repeatedly.  (Blasted child!!)

2. Tess decided she no longer wanted anything to do with nursing.  At all.  It was more traumatic for me than for her, that's for sure.  More details on that later.  (Blasted baby!!)  (She's not starving, by the way, in case you couldn't tell from the chub-a-licious picture!)

3. This weekend we (meaning I) decided it was finally time to paint the kitchen.  The paint the previous owners used was - pardon my French - cr@p, and was in desperate need of replacing.  I had been pouring over paint chips for months and was sure I wanted it a deep, beautiful shade of blue, as best seen here on Cole.  (Blasted toddler!!)  I mean seriously, who puts their face in wet paint?!  Cole, apparently.

The first coat we put on the walls was a tinted primer, which we actually really liked.  Especially after we put on the first coat of dark blue on one of the walls.  It was so dark.  And so blue.  It's hard to describe.  I mean, it wasn't terrible, we just knew we didn't like it as well as the light blue.  Plus, it seriously would have taken 3-4 coats to really look good.  So we scrapped the dark blue in favor of a light blue just like the primer.  Ironically, the closest match was the exact same shade we used in the office.  We must really like greyish blues.

Anywho, two days later and it's finally finished.  I think it looks great with the color of our cabinets and floors.  (It looks a bit off on the pictures.  Oh well - come on over and see the real thing!)  Lance is a champion husband for only giving me a little bit of grief over the whole project.  (Although I suspect if I ever want my bathroom painted I will have to do it myself.)

Although we've finished the big part, it will take me weeks to go through and do all the touch-up painting and cleaning of places where specs of paint got where they shouldn't.  Oh well - maybe you should wait until then to come see it.  Oh, and I still have to make a valence for the window.  Dang it, I'm gonna be busy with this kitchen for months, mainly because I LOATHE curtain-making in all shapes and forms and will procrastinate it as much as possible.  (Why not just buy a valence?  See below.)

4. I have started editing again.  When Lance was in grad school I helped supplement our very meager income by editing for a site called EditMyEnglish.com.  It was great because I could work as much or as little as I wanted, all from home.

With four kiddos (the last one being the most expensive so far), a mortgage, a car payment, lots of expensive unexpected happenings in the last few months, and several other factors, I just felt like it was time to help pitch in some way.  (No, we're not broke.  No, we're not destitute.  No, you may not put an offer on the house.  Well, if it's in the half million dollar range, then sure.  But otherwise, no.) We're just tightening our purse strings a bit and trying to become a bit more budget-friendly.

It wouldn't make sense for me to work outside of the home since all of my income would probably go to child care, so editing is perfect once again.  I'm really grateful for this opportunity, though.  It really is a blessing, even if some of the papers I edit bore me to tears.  It takes up a bit of my spare time, though, so blogging might remain a bit sporadic.

So there you go.  Hopefully life will calm down just a bit, but I doubt it.  Preschool starts on Wednesday, soccer on Saturday, the list goes on and on.  And to think - just a few short weeks ago I had enough free time to watch Netflix for a couple of hours each night!
