Tess's First Cereal

For a few weeks now Tess has been really interested in what goes on at the dinner table.  She'll sit on my lap (because heaven forbid she have to sit in her high chair all by herself!) and watch every single bite go into my mouth.  She's mesmerized.  I've even give her a few tastes of things like applesauce, cantaloupe, grapes, and all have been very well received. 

So I decided today would be the day she gets cereal for the first time.  I happily anticipated the funny faces and food falling all over the place.

Instead, this is what I got:

I have NEVER had a child not react to food!  She sat there as if she didn't realize there was anything in her mouth.  I thought that maybe the cereal was too thick, but even after thinning it out I didn't get much of a reaction.

 

After much cajoling she kind of started moving food around in her mouth.  And then the reactions I so wanted came.

I love this shot because even though you can't see her mouth, her eyes do all the talking.  (And they're saying "What in the world is this crazy lady doing to me?!")

She didn't eat very much, but I didn't really expect her to.  She did, however, discover the joys of spitting with a mouthful of food.  Tess must be an over-achiever, because that's a skill that took her brothers at least a few weeks to figure out and she did it after just a few minutes.
