Fun Fact

Here's a little fun fact some of you might not know about me: I am allergic to walnuts. (And, to a lesser and not as consistent extent, pecans.)

Not horribly allergic; if I eat one I don't swell up and die. (Obviously.) But I do get something just as annoying - canker sores in my mouth.

So it's not a horrible reaction, but it does present an interesting dilemma when faced with yummy food that has walnuts in it: eat it and endure the consequences or practice some self-control and not put myself through the pain.

Sometimes I know that the food will be worth it - like pralines. So yummy! But other times I'm presented with food that I've never had. How do I know if eating it will be worth the pain? On one hand, it could be the best thing I've ever eaten in my life. (Don't laugh - it could happen!) On the other hand, it could be gross or, even worse, just mediocre. And then I have go through the pain for nothing. And trust me, cankers can hurt!

What predicaments life presents me! What quagmires! What quandaries! (Another fun fact: I really like Thesaurus.com.)

Tonight at bunko I didn't face such a complex problem - I didn't know there were walnuts in the food. Heather hosted, and she had made some mini bundt apple cake thingies - tre cute and very tasty looking. Without even thinking I took a bite - yum! It wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd bite that I realized there were chopped walnuts in it. Doh! No worries - the cakes were canker worthy. And I've already got three cankers in my mouth and no regrets to prove it!

That's funny that you posted about this because we were just talking about this last night! We have a Healthy Living group that just started in my ward, and last night we were talking about good ways to get your omega-3's. Walnuts happen to be one of the non-fishy ways, which I am all for. Then a lady was talking about how walnuts give her cankers...they give my MIL cankers too! She prefers pecans instead...I guess they don't bother either of these ladies like walnuts do.I am sorry you have to suffer for the love of food. What a sport! BTW...I heard the white part of the orange peel is supposed to help canker sores. Just peel some off your orange and stick it on. I guess it can't hurt to try!

canker sores are so not fun. I get canker sores that cover the roof of my mouth whenever I'm overly stressed or If I'm not getting enough sleep. I cannot imagine having to pick which foods to eat for the joy of eating the food. I usually opt not to eat foods with nuts, I'm not allergic to them however, I just don't care for nuts usually.

You are so funny, and I sure enjoy reading your posts each day! There's something so casual and nice about the tone in your writing- so readable!

Sorry about your cankers. Does baking soda help? Another remedy for your list. I have tried that before, and then wondered afterwards, "Well cookies have baking soda in them, maybe a cookie would work next time?" Ah, probably not! Or we could brush our teeth with cookies, right?

Hmm... mental note: eat cookies the next time I get a canker! :)

I feel so bad - I completely forgot about you and walnuts. Although, the blonde brownies had walnuts in them too, so maybe that is why you have so many cankers. I won't do it again - I promise!

Heather - Don't feel bad! It was definitely not your fault that you made food too good to resist. :)
