So even though we're having a combined birthday party on Friday with the Frys and Yarringtons, we had a little family party tonight.
And since first birthdays should be, I think, more about mom and all the work she did a year ago, we went out to dinner. (No way I'm cookin' dinner - a year ago I went through the LONGEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE (duh-duh-dumm...)) Nowhere fancy, just Arnie's down the street. It's cheap and loud enough that the kids just blend in.
We came home and opened birthday presents - something Spencer had been looking forward to all day. We now have a percussion section in our home, because Spencer gave Josh a xylophone and Grandpa and Grandma Roper sent a loud drum. More noise! More toys to trip and fight over! Fun!
Then we got out the gift Lance and I bought - a bag of 100 soft, air filled balls. We put Josh in his playpen and dumped the balls in. He was in baby HEAVEN!! (If you know Josh at all, you know he loves balls and loves to throw them with his wicked-southpaw-rocket arm.) Great yelps of Joshie joy were abundant.

Next came my favorite part of any first birthday - the cake. Okay, in this case, the trifle. Whatever.
We let the one year old eat the cake (trifle!) with their hands, 'cause that's how we roll. Josh didn't quite know what to do with it at first - he poked it and giggled a lot. He quickly figured it out, though, and went to town. I am really quite impressed with how much he ate, although I shouldn't be because this is Josh we're talkin' about.
In my opinion, you can never have too many birthday cake (trifle!!)-covered-baby pictures. So here's some sweet, sweet eye candy.
Happy first birthday, Joshie. You might have 489 teeth coming in at once, making you the grouchiest, droolingest baby ever. You might also freak out every time I leave the room, and cling to my ankles so that I can't walk when we are in the same room. You might bean me in the head with balls and toys several times a day with your target-seeking rocket arm. And you might be the chubbiest, heaviest, eatingest baby ever.
But I love every inch of you and everything about you - you'll always be my little Joshie boy!

Looks like Josh loved having the trifle! It looks yummy and I love making them too - layering is fun and you get to be creative.
